Like so totally awesomundo link Bunkie! I really like the notion of the gelatine capsule. I believe that would work really well for me as it would isolate the blossom and dissolve with the rain and dew as it was no longer necessary. I would have to concern myself with marking the pepper afterward to know which ones were for seed, but I could do that with a scrap of bright colored yarn or even colored electrical tape loosely wrapped around the stem. Thanks for finding that for me!

yes jo, i use bright colored yarn to mark them too. i haven't saved any 'true' pepper seed, but want to next year. i was thinking that the 'bagging a branch' idea might work for me. easier than screening in the whole plant...i think...

"True"? What does "true" mean with regards to peppers? I think that bagging would kill the branch here. To hot and humid. Either way is better and easier than screening though. Cheaper as well, by a LONG shot! Hey, that link you posted is awesome! Did you get time to cruise it good? ALL kinds of seed saving tips, photos, AND a great section on terra preta! Talk about up my alley!

Couldn't you use a paper bag or some other more breathable material?

Good suggestions! I certainly wouldn't want to use plastic but I would think that cheesecloth would 'shade' the pepper branches, no? Which would be good for MNJ.

I'm still intrigued with the gel capsule idea. However, I was thinking of paperbags as being to hot... but now cheesecloth, I really like that idea and it's something I have on hand. What about little muslin bags though? I buy muslin by the bolt cause I make the boys clothes (as much as I can that is) and muslin is the best thing going for protection from the elements yet cool in summer and warm in winter with their little woolen sweaters. I could seam up some custom sized muslin bags and that would take care of marking and everything.
How will that effect the fruit in developing though? Would it encourage blight spores cause it would take longer to dry? Does the sun really need to "touch" the fruit? I'm thinking some experimentation will definitely be in order next year.

jo, what i meant by 'true' seed was pure strain, not crossed.
i would think bagging the peppers would be no different than bagging tomato blossoms, except you're doing a branch or the flower and nearby.

Well that's interesting! What kind of limits are set on this? Is there a standard of some sort? How would you know if something has never been crossed? Isn't it probable that everything has been crossed at some point particularly with plants like peppers/tomatoes/eggplants? I'm gonna have to apply my favorite word to this thread now... FASCINATING!

i guess i wasn't very clear jo. what i meant is when i plant Cayenne Peppers, i'd like to save seed that will grow Cayenne Peppers, not crosses. to me that's true seed or pure seed, developing the same plant as was planted.
