Bonsai, I'm a full Zone warmer than Darth, so I'm already off to a good start. Also, as I said, the garden at that house had poor lighting as it had a treeline on two sides and a forest on the third. We solved that problem, we moved. I planted a Bakers Dozen of pole beans in a balcony box on the deck. Today, we have 13 germinating I forgot to write down what variety I planted there? Oopsie. But the pods look brownish and the beans have red stripes running through them. Rattlesnake perhaps? If so, guess I'm going to get an opportunity to see how they do here with a southwesterly exposure and lots of afternoon sun!

Deep fried? I missed your post about deep frying them the first time around Jo. That's really different! I'll pass on the beer batter, but Tempura sounds delish!

Deep frying brings out a toasted pecan flavor in the rattlesnake beans. I haven't noticed it in other beans though I still LOVE them cooked that way. Beer batter is better for onion rings and sometimes I'll add some cornmeal at the end and make a sort of beer hushpuppy.

Poor puppy getting all drunked up Okay, so I'm almost positive now that the pole beans I planted and forgot to mark, are Rattlesnake. They are doing great; have 14 plants. As long as the squirrels don't decide to trip the light fantastic across my deck railing and help themselves, there should be beans this year.

Squirrels make for great target practice. I'm not sure about cooking them... I have enough planted to share, tell your squirrels to come to our yard. =o)

Oh no, they aren't Rattlesnake. I found a pod and they are Cherokee Trail of tears. I knew they were dark, but not that dark. Plus, the beans are a bit stripey and it's been several years since I planted CTOT so I couldn't remember if they had a bit of colour or not? Oh well, perhaps I can deep fry those too, (being another southern bean and all, y 'all Actually Jo, the squirrels haven't been bad lately. neighbours were away so they weren't being fed their usual bag o peanuts every day. Neighbours are back, so now we are back to my yard being littered with peanut shells and my bird bath being full of the remnants. Squirrels will also be shortcutting through my yard and meddling in whatever they see fit. Geez I hate the little critters....

What would you say is the most attractive pole bean? Scarlet Runner Beans. I love those bright red flowers.

blue, I think you have a neighbor problem, not a squirrel problem.
For years my block had an enormous population of feral cats, thanks to the sweet lady who kept a well-stocked kibble-and-water station in her backyard for the kitties. Eventually, those of us who had neutered domestic cats got fed up with our vet bills and started trapping the ferals and getting them neutered, but the problem didn't really go away until she did, taking the free lunch with her.

CAN you shoot them? What about potential rabies? Could they be reported on that count? Really, they have a right to feed them if they want... but... well... then again... You have a right to not suffer the consequences of their actions as well.
Sorta like people who have boom boxes in their cars. They can destroy their hearing if they choose. But when the deafening noise invades MY space.... grrrrrrr.......
