So I've been pining for a pressure canner since reading this thread when it first started. Today a way has been made to make this purchase. I'm getting the 915 (15.5 qt) from Amazon. The price shows at $179.
What about jars though? Where is the best place to get those, online or should I actually go to a "normal" store? TSC should be opening in a month or so.
Michel, I would love to learn your dry canning technique! Is it from a book or did you learn as a child?

Jo, glad things worked out so that yo can buy one. Around here, at auctions you can usually buy old canning jars for just about nothing. Well, that may not be the case this year, but in the past anyway. Older folks who no longer garden sometimes are just looking for someone to take them. Maybe you could post an ad locally looking for them. I bet you could meet some nice people in the bargain. The problem is lids. They are expensive. Well, relatively speaking anyway. I'm sure there is a place you could buy them by the case, but I pick them up at Rural King, like a TSC kind of store.

I found a reference to Rural King last night and checked out their site. I THINK they have the lowest prices for jars at just under $10 per dozen for quart, wide mouth. I'd like to get some 2 qt jars as well for soup base.
By the by... when looking at the sizes of the pressure canner, I notice that several sizes allow room for only 7, qt size jars. Does this mean pot height and therefore the 15.5 qt size won't be able to accommodate the larger jars?

If I can recommend one thing, it is wide mouth all the way but for sauces or liquid things. The hell with the price difference, they are worth every penny of it when it comes to marinates stuff and all...
MJ I will accompany you in the process, do not worry.
It is so much easier anyway...

Thank you Michel! I sure do appreciate it! I'm with you on the wide mouth jar issue. I make quite a bit of jam and I always try to get the wide mouth for that. I've gotten the narrow ones by accident a time or two. Not fun! Guess I need to go tell my peas and beans to hurry up!

Hardware Stores like Ace should stock canning jars. But Karen had a good suggestion as well. Try watching the ads on Freecycle or Craigslist, or placing a want ad on them for used jars. I'm still using jars I bought back in the early 80's however, I discard any that have nicks on the rim and I always buy new lids every year.
