hi, I thought that I was the only one that loved seeds and plant breeding so much, and then I found this forum I have learned so many neat things from this forum so far, so I thought I would join. I am currently living near San Francisco and don't have much room to garden at all, but I do have people throughout california that grow seeds for me in exchange for seeds. I have what I thought is a good seed collection, but the more that I learn, the more that I think that I need to get, I am working on rice types now, I have 3 types so far (Carolina gold, a regular unknown, and an unknown sweet sticky type) and will be growing some this summer. my other hobbies are cooking, physics, watching movies, brewing, ceramics, and good conversations.

We are recently from Los Altos/Mountain View area. We live in coastal North Carolina now. I've been interested in acquiring Carolina Gold and growing it out. Can you please tell me a bit more about your experience with it?

Welcome. Glad you found us. Now, can I interest you in some tomato seeds (that's all I've got to send right now.)
Rice, how do you grow it? I've heard of Carolina Gold. It almost went extinct if I remember correctly.

I just got the seeds, so I will be growing it this summer, so nothing to report yet, I got the seeds from southernexposure.comassuming that I get a return this summer, I can send you seeds. how are you liking the move ? I have been thinking of moving to somewhere that has low priced land but can't decide where to go. pugs, how to grow rice is on this blog gallimaufree.wordpress.com/2008/05/14/basic-survival-skills-grow-your-own-rice/it looks easy and fun in small amounts

Way cool on the Carolina Gold seed. I promise to be patient.
As for North Carolina. Well, my husband lived his entire life in Los Altos Hills. He was born in Palo Alto and didn't leave until he had to quit his job cause he was going blind and we could no longer afford the rent. We had a 2 bdr we paid $1,000 for. Now, we are BUYING a 3/2 with just shy of 2 acres and our monthly payment is $612. We like the people, we like the weather, it's great in every way except the food is BORING! But then, I cook so it's not so bad. I even know how to make fresh rice noodle and we have a Chinese restaurant that will cook them for me so we get the proper "wok hey". As veggies come in, I can take them as well. We are thinking of Tennessee as a next move. In fact, there is a place for sale, $3.4 million for 2,300 acres. And the house is drop dead gorgeous. SO, if you have that kind of money to drop, PM me and I'll give you the link to the sale site. The stove is worth the price all by itself but there is also the horse barn, a HUGE kennel and way to much to go into.
NC is losing "open" space like crazy and the taxes are going through the roof. Our area has military influx that is ballooning. For that reason only, I don't recommend it. Tennessee has colder winters, but there are other folks from that area that can tell you more than I can and with greater accuracy. Still, compared to what's going on in California, I say move. In a heart beat!

Dan: You use physics all the time, but just don't realize it. You apply the laws to something that you are trying to do, to figure out the best way to do it, although you often don't realize it is the laws you are applying, it's "just the way things work" = which is all physics is about. something along the lines of, = you don't drive nails with a can of spray paint (something a friend of mines wife did) unless you want to repaint the whole room.

if I had learned physics in school I would have given up on it, but I learned most of it before school went and tried to mess it up.

Spacecase, we have a Realtor up in Surry County (Mayberry) who is just keeping her eyes peeled for us long term. She has access to a program that generates a sort of daily newsletter that I get daily and shows me stuff coming on the market within my critera, price changes, and stuff like that. If you are interested in a virtual introduction, PM me.
