I'm SURE I have a few things lying about hidden that I will come across when it's to late to do anything about it this year. But that's another story all together. With any luck at all, I'll spend about 50% less time and money grocery shopping this year.

By the by, there are "crumbies" in these seed packets. What are they? I noticed that others have crumbs in their seeds as well and I just kinda chalked it up to breakfast. Can you elaborate?

The rest of you might want to know of something else I've just discovered as well. I adore Asian cuisine. GOOD Asian cuisine. It does not exist here, mainly due to a lack of decent ingredients and there is no demand for it either. I have connected with a new restaurant though and told them that I have certain ingredients and "would you cook them for me?" Surprisingly, the answer was an enthusiastic, "YES!" I'll still pay them, but I can't produce the BTUs needed for really good stir fry on my standard stove top and with my non stick cookware. Good Asian food depends a lot on "wok hey" or "kiss of the wok". That is the caramelized bits that are created when ingredients hit the intensely hot surface. Can't wait to show up with an armload of some of of these greens!!!! THANK YOU!

Hey Jo, i'm curious, what do you do with the cotton that you grow, is it ornamental or do you have a use for it?
I have some cotton seeds, and was curious.

That's a great question Penny! Actually, I've never grown cotton before. My intention is to process and use it for clothing and whatever else it can be used for. Paper maybe? OoOOo, I know, someone else can grow flax and we can start printing HOMEGROWN currency!?!?!? ::roaring with laughter:: Actually, that is not entirely a laughable notion. It could be used within a known group for exchange as we see fit. Flax and cotton is what US "paper" money is made from....

I spin it into thread that I then use for other things,
a wood stick (like a pencil) and an old CD disk make a nice spindle.

Have you grown the Red Creole onion before? I should have some seeds coming as it looked like an interesting onion to grow.

Hey Dan, I've "tried" to grow everything, but without ANY success particularly with the alliums. I'm pretty certain the issue has been soil though. Would you like the Red Creole seed? PM me and I'll get 'em to ya if you do. Won't be a lot, but prolly enough to keep you from buying them elsewhere until you have a chance to see how they perform for you.

Yea Telsing, TELL me about it! ::laughing:: That should be enough to keep me busy till the swap huh? I put down a few flowers, brassicas, and onions into the flats I got from Novosel yesterday. I'll do a couple more today with stuff that can also go outside for sprouting. I'm "hiding" them under pine needles for the moment.

I like that idea for a spindle Spacecase. But before I get to that point, I'll need to card it won't I? I have a little pile of cotton right now, but it has "stuff" in it and it's uncarded.

Speaking of which,

Alan, the red cotton does appear to be a shorter and coarser fiber than the green which also feels a bit softer.

Penny, definitely grow it out. Haven't you heard, Karen is going into the weaving business! ::smiles and waves at Karen::

Jo, we actually used to make rugs, just your plain old rag rugs, no fancy weaving. I have/had another loom that is smaller than my great-grandmothers. It's not at my house though. Years ago my husband was injured at work, and was off for about 3 months with a broken wrist. He started weaving with an enternal fixator on his arm! He actually liked weaving. It was kind of funny to see him doing it, but it kept him busy. While I think growing cotton is a cool novelty item, you couldn't pay me enough to try to make anything with it. Do you know how much thread is needed to even start to make a rug?? I do know where there is a cotton gin for sale though, if anyone should be in the market for that kind of antique.

I've been wanting a loom that would work for rag rugs! Don't suppose you would want to sell it? I've been saving fabric for years for just that purpose as a matter of fact. I tried braiding, but it didn't float my boat so to speak.

Yep, I've got a pretty good idea how much fiber it would take to make something. It's actually pretty easy to convert. For example, Mikes sweater used 12 balls of worsted weight yarn. Each ball weighs about 400 gm. So... lemme think here... just shy of 5 kilos of fiber. I think a bale of cotton weighs around 100 lbs? Anyone know for sure? A pair of socks on the other hand use less than one ball of the same type of yarn. Aren't you glad you asked?!?! ;D

Regarding the gin... is it a relatively small one and is it functional? I would be interested in buying it if I can afford it and I can bring it home and use it.
