I just got the latest Lee Valley Tools catalogue, and they have something along the same lines, but much cheaper, and you can get replacement blades. www.leevalley.com/garden/page.aspx?c=1&p=64798&cat=2,42706,40719 This one I might try, resharpening the blades shouldn't be too hard, and replacement blades aren't that expensive.

This is all very interesting! Being a farmer's daughter and growing up on a farm, I have always been interested in how things grow. I do have a question. Does the fruit trees that are grafted onto root stock take less time to produce fruit? I have always been interested in a Persimon tree, mainly because I love persimon pudding. I have been told that if I plant a tree or 2 it would be at least 15 yrs or so before I coud enjoy any fruit from it. So is it the same for a grafted tree? Thanks, Janet

I kinda think you will get earlier fruiting Janet. Don't take me for my word though, because I'm new to the grafting thing myself. I made my first effort against some pear trees. I did a REALLY crappy job and lost all my pear scion. I'll be working with some tomatoes as well, but not for about a month or so.
