You could try that.
Another idea would be bleach or peroxide. I haven't found a substitute for either of these. I still use peroxide on blood stains, and bleach on whites, and cloths for milking, because I want these sterile and white white.
But compared with the price of detergents, bleach is still reasonable. I know not the best thing for "green" but, it does still whiten!
