What kind of endive seed should I get to grow for Belgian endive forcing in fall?

The ones here have witlof or witloof on the packets. Franchi Sementi offers one called Witloof di Bruxelles but I'm not sure who your local Franchi distributor would be.

Total agreement with Ray here. Just google ITALIAN SEEDS and you will end up with the american distributor that has Franchi or Bavicchi seeds, I think the name is Italian Seeds and Tools... one thing, italian seed companies put a LOT of seeds in their envelopes, like 10 times more......

Yes, Franchi puts hundreds of seeds in the packs. Try www.growitalian.com for the endive seeds. They are a distributor for Franchi in the US.

I have offers for seed trades of other kinds of endive but I am only interested in forcing it in winter. So does anyone have it for trade?

I noticed Johnny's had the seed too. I just don't know if I want to place another order at this time. I was hoping I had gotten everything.

This is a picture of my witloof chicory, which is being blanched in a muckbucket in the conservatory/sunroom. I did evidently not block out all the light (I just inverted another muck bucket), and the blanched 'chichons' are not as tightly packet as the commercial version, but they tasted delicious. Completely bitter free. At the moment I am harvesting a second cut from the same roots. Even less tightly packed, but very useable in salads all the same. I also have roots in the garden, covered with black florists buckets, which are not ready yet. ps hope uploading this picture works Attachments:

The picture of the witloof chicons just reminded me that I have forced dandelion roots in a similar fashion and they were quite delicious as well - loose heads but tasty and very unbitter.
