Hello everyone,
I just recently joined this forum. I live in an urban part of south-western Ontario, Canada. We moved to this property just over two years ago. Our backyard is of a generous size which I'm hoping to convert into food production over the next few years. It's a bit overwhelming in terms of size and amount of work involved, but we're working on it one bit at a time. I would love to have a couple of backyard chickens and perhaps some ducks, but until the by-laws in our city change, it remains a dream.
I've been greatly influenced by the writings and works of Masanobu Fukuoka, Bill Mollison, Toby Hemenway, Emilia Hazelip and Jean Pain. I'm particularly interested in the application of permaculture and natural farming on a small, urban scale.
This is my second year gardening. This year I'll be growing tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, beans, peas, chard, endive, winter squash, summer squash, cucumber, watermelon and melon.
One of my passions is seed preservation of heirloom vegetables. My neighbours, all of whom are in their 70's and 80's, often speak fondly of the way vegetables used to taste while growing up abroad. Our conversations made me realize how little I know about heirloom vegetables and thus I began a journey of collecting, growing and sharing heritage varieties. None of my neighbours grow their own vegetables, but each year I'd like to grow an heirloom variety from their home country: France, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Britain, Switzerland, Italy and Yugoslavia. Sharing the harvest with them is something that I truly enjoy.
When I'm not puttering in the yard or reading about soil biology & composting, I spend my time in the kitchen - baking and making preserves.
Thanks for having me and I look forward to participating!
