Anybody ever keep wild rabbits in a cage? I've been worried they'd die in captivity, but they sure are cute. I'm curious about crossing them with domesticated rabbits. Any stories?

kind of interesting you should mention that today. At some point some one around here must have let loose some domesticated bunnies, off and on in past years I have spotted a bunny mix,saw one this morning,to much white fur for a wild one.

John, I had an injured wild rabbit this winter in a cage. She was an adult. So she wasn't too happy in the cage at all. We had to keep it covered all the time or she kept bouncing off the sides. I released her about 5 weeks ago. She seems much happier now. I've been seeing her around the property & she is doing well. I'm just hoping she can avoid the fox right now. Little bastards are everywhere this yr.

The one main problem I can think of with crossing them is the fact that the American wild rabbits and the European domestic rabbit are in fact in two different genera, so they really can't crossbreed. Having said that there are fairly appreciable populations of feral european rabbits in the US, so crossbreeding sucess may have a lot to do with first figuring out what kind of "wild" rabbits you have.

John, if you are interested is getting some rabbits, I can help. If you will be coming to the party in September, I can send some home with you. We have mini lops and californians. Should have some of the new mini satins by then too.
