Hello everyone, I´m Paulien and I live in the very North of The Netherlands in Friesland. I have quite a large garden and my biggest hobby is to grow hardy exotic fruit trees and shubs from seeds. I also like to graft fruit trees. Since september i'm the proud owner of a greenhouse (my hubby has to switch off the light to get me back into the house again ) I love to exchange seeds with people all over the world. So pm me if you like to swap seeds with me. I have a list (but not very updated i'm afraid) on my homepage; home.kpn.nl/pvandeburgt/ And it's in Dutch ;D Oh, and i'm 8 months pregnant at the moment.... Hope to learn to know this site and the participants here. All the best and greetings from Holland!!!

Welcome to the board.
I can't speak it or write it but so much of the vocabulary is close to either English, German, or French, that I can read most of it. There are a few towns in my state where older people speak it.
Can you speak Frissian? A friend and I were just discussing how most of the German and English dialects are being replaced with standard dialects.
Congratulations! This is WONDERFUL news!

Thank you all for your nice and warm welcome!
@ Patrick, Groeten uit Friesland! Amsterdam is nice too isn't it, with it's canals and lovely old houses. Can you speak Dutch already? @ Stratcat, Thank you and yes it's sooooo very nice to have a greenhouse, now i can extent the season even longer... lol @ Atash, Thank you, and yes i can speak Frisian, i have lived here for 34 years now. I sometimes go shopping in Germany (i live about 70 km from the German border) and there the older people talk Ostfriesisch, and thats a mix from German, Frisian, Danisch and Gronings (wich is a province next to Friesland). @ Flowerpower, Thank you! @ Penny, Thank you!

Welcome, paulien!
My wife and I spent our honeymoon in the Netherlands in the spring of 2000. It was wonderful! Our hotel was in Rotterdam, but we traveled around the country daily. I could go on and on... Let's just say the flower markets alone made the trip worth it, but there was so much more.
I hope we can do some trading when I get organized.

@ Patrick, Groeten uit Friesland! Amsterdam is nice too isn't it, with it's canals and lovely old houses. Can you speak Dutch already? Ja zeker, nederlands is geen probleem. Ik woon hier nu al 20 jaar en ben bijna helemaal ingeburgerd... In 2004-2008 I spent a lot of time in Friesland, in the areas of Dokkum and Wierum. A friend had some land I used as a garden. I don't speak any Fries, but sometimes I would speak Dutch and people would speak back in Fries. I used to really like that, and mostly understood it. Fries is a really interesting language; a little English (sometimes very old English and Scots), some Dutch and a bit of what Americans know as Low German. I've also visited Oost Friesland, and the islands in both Germany and the Netherlands. It was lots of fun to listen to all the different ways people speak. All I could say was 'moin'. I'm glad these languages are coming back again. My great grandfather was from Danzig (now called Gdansk), and we know he used to speak a Low German dialect. My last name is Wiebe, which is a Fries name. I still have a few friends in Friesland, but I don't visit often anymore. I was in Estonia a few yeas ago, and it's the same there! What they speak is clearly related to Dutch and Fries. Now the Dutch government wants to remove the status of Fries as an official language. For the first 10 years I lived here Dutch people used to say that Fries was really just the same as Dutch, and they couldn't understand why it had to be called it's own language. Now Dutch people complain they can't understand Fries, and they want Dutch to be the only official language. Some people are never happy! The politics here are really a mess now anyway, and this is just one more part of it.
