I can't seem to get my horseradish to either grow or croak; it's been on the farm for ~4 years, just hanging on.

My favorite ground-cover in an orchard is strawberries. ditto ditto ditto! I find them to be the best ground cover EVER! shallow roots... ..keeps weeds away easy to control distracts the birds away from my garden beds where the food strawberries are ...easy to find homes for if they get out of control I plant alpine strawberries around all my trees in fact it is my number one ground cover in the entire garden ....another thing I plant is garlic around the base of my trees and roses it does not spread and is not an official ground cover like the rest of the suggestions but it is great for the bug control and looks very nice when you let it go to seed there .. oh and here is a hint that seems to be working really well! and I did not notice but do not think anyone else mentioned it... Peas! ..one year I had a handful "extra" of peas to plant and instead of putting them away I thought why not put them around the fruit trees..every fruit tree gets a chicken wire cage around the base with rags in it to "try" keep the critters from eating scraping and demolishing them ...so my intent was just to make the chicken wire look pretty with the pea vines .. ...the past few years deer have been eating the peas and leaving my trees the garden beds alone!!! so that is cool! ..I just keep planting them all year then work them into the soil when they are spent
