Does anyone know anything about Papago corn? I just wound up with seed of a Papago x Painted Mountain cross.

The corn should be drought tolerant considering its origins. Here is a link describing the Papago. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tohono_O'odham. It looks like they grew both sweet and flour corn.

I see that Native Seeds SEARCH sells both a Tohono O'odham 60-Day and Tohono O'odham June corn.

I've got some of (probably) the same seed. I was told it was going extinct because of inbreeding depression, so the grower gave it an injection of diversity, Painted Mountain. It's supposed to be the earliest corn, or neck-and-neck for the title.

hanione know others corn that are so fast growing? how fast is painted mountain? Painted mountain was my earliest corn last year. Ashworth was second earliest. Precocious (advertised as 65 days) was third earliest. Painted mountain was also the first to sprout in cold spring soil.

I am crossing O'odham 60 Day lour with Gaspe Flint from Quebec. Those are reputed to be the two earliest corns, but one cool humid adapted, the other hot dry adapted. Scroll down to ASAP where I write about it, and others have added to it.

PAPAGO X PAINTED MOUNTAIN CORN
This is Dave Christensen who developed Painted Mtn. I have crossed Papago to Painted Mtn several times. Papago is about as fast. There are different lines of Papago. I used the shortest most compact line for drought hardiness.
I did not continue with it because the kernel arrangement was so jumbled and other minor problems. But, I am looking at it again because the climate is heating more every year, and tassels are starting to fry for some people with any corn. Papago may be the most heat and drought tolerant corn to breed to for the future climate.
I don't know if anyone is still reading this. If you want to talk call me at 406 930-1663 or email buckskin@mtintouch.net
Dave
