Redbrick invited me to come over here. I'm a very early refugee from IDig and it's tolerance for flamers. Life is too short to put up with people like Z-man and his cohorts. So I left it to them.
I'm Brook, and am an avid collector and grower of heirlooms. In fact, I am a co-founder, and Managing Director of the Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the edible crop plants and sustainable agricultural practices of those states in the mountain South.
I'm a freelance writer by trade, with gardening and related subjects among my areas of special interest. I've written on those topics in Mother Earth News, Kentucky Gardener, OFA's Gardeners Companion, and The Heirloom Gardener, among others, including a regular column in Small Farm Today. I was a major influence getting The Heirloom Gardener started, and, in fact, named the magazine. When I see what Jere Gettle has done with it, I regret the time and energy I spent on it. But that's water under the bridge.
My other interests include hunting, fishing, and gourmet cooking; hiking & backpacking (indeed, I wrote the definitive guide to day trails in Kentucky); and herbalism.

We are happy to have you here and I can't express how important that your work with the Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy is. Glad to have someone of your expertise around here posting and welcome to the family! -Alan

Thanks for the welcome, Alan.
Could you explain one thing, though. In the author's ID boxes, on the left, what is the "Karma" thing? Thanx.

I believe it's a way of expressing that you either like someone or don't like them. If you click plus Karma it means you like them/their posts negative is the opposite.

Huh???
Are we talking about the same thing? What plus & minus?
What I'm seeing is the word Karma followed by a number (from 0 to 2 so far). With those who have a number other than 0 there is another line that says [Exalt I Smite]. The exalt/smite are in blue, presumably some sort of link---I've been afraid to click cuz I don't know what they do.

I think if someone exaults you, you get a positive karma and if they smite you, you get a karma taken away. Obviously, some joker has smited you, as you are -1. I'll try to exault you and bring you back to normal. Then we'll know how it works. Huh??? Are we talking about the same thing? What plus & minus? Brook, you're back to 0 on karma, so that's what it is; someone smited you. I don't use those buttons but obviously some use them for no reason other than to annoy. I wonder if it is possible to disable the feature alltogether as I've never seen it used on any of these forums much.

Hmmmmmm? So, let's see. I get invited to join. Barely am around. And already have made enemies? Or one, anyway.
But I guess I have friends, too, as I'm now up to +1. A change of three points in less than that many hours.
Goodness, can y'all imagine what the Z-man could do with one of these anonymous flame machines.
I wonder how high the numbers go? What say everybody exhalt Alan one time, just to see what happens.

He'd be the garden forum version of Ahmadinejad or Kim Jong Il. Oh, the horror!

As far as z-man goes I could spend an entire afternoon smiting him. I think we're a nice enough group of people that we could just disable the smite thing and just exalt everybody. I think everybody should have some nice Karma points. LoreD
