Thanks anyway, blueadzuki! Sorry to hear about the frost. All I've managed to find at the Chinese grocery is the bagged variety that is quite thouroughly de-hulled.
Good to know the chickens found it tasty, dumont!
I'll keep looking and post any positive results here. I found a seedbank in Thailand that has it, but need to see if they will ship to me and at what cost.
Yes, I guess selling out of a bin is something you'll only seen in Chinatown (and even then, it's more often at the herb store, not the drug store) ones with thier shells on do sometimes appear even in the bagged stuff (though admittedly a lot less often than the bin stuff) for the record (so you don't miss any that have thier germ intact, but not thier shell, viable seed is a pale yellow brown (basically wheat kernel colored) as opposed to white. If I DO manage to get it growing and producing this time (I think I'll start them indoors in a month in little pots, then harden the plants off before planting them) I'll keep you in mind.
Since the hard version is apparantly a common sight in your neck of the woods maybe you can confirm what trixtrax said (about some having shell that are bright red) I still am fairly sure most of the red ones I have seen are dyed, but I did see a photo that SEEMED to show red ones on a plant, so I am no longer sure.
Oh and check the That seed caregfully, as I mentioned there is a third (and in fact a fourth) form out there (the long skinny one is three, and I supposed the micro seeded one I saw once as a kid is 4) since all are equally edible, not everyone bothers to keep which is which accurate.
