Are these from Wild Garden Seed? I bought some from them with a name something like that.

Yep that's where I bought them too. Then Lieven told me that he's the Belgium Breeder!

# 23 = 264312 (only 14 out of 30 of these germinated), but they are looking very good. # 31 = 264316 Also, I finally found the lost field tag, I believe they are Giant Zittau. I've grown this variety before, so I'll be able to identify it at the end of the season. So Area 51 does have an identity. Edited...nope not Giant Zittau. Wrong color. Attachments:

Here's what my onion experiment looked like about 5 days ago. (I've never planted onions indoors before.) The onions closest to the camera in front of the twine are Holly's left-over GRIN seed. The ones further back are Utah Yellow Spanish. Today I received more onion seeds, and also in digging through my stash I found more onion varieties to be planted. I'm thinking I'm liking starting a sample indoors. Seems like a good way to avoid getting lost in the weeds. Varieties I expect to plant include: Cortona's Valdichiana heirloom Long Island Seed Project's Bulb Onion Cipollini Giant Zittau Carentan Valencia Welsh Alisa Craig Red Welsh Juane Paille Des Vertas Stuttgar Australian Brown Southport Red Globe Yellow of Parma I haven't researched them for Cytoplasmic Male Sterility, but I'll do that before getting too carried away with them.

I put in a whole flat of Cortona's Valdichiana before sending the rest of the seed to Joesph. Hopefully between the two of us, we can get enough seed to send back! Here's another look at those Belgium Breeder Leeks from Lieven. Today I set Wild Garden Seed Lettuce in between them. Attachments:

Okay, who sent me this walking/potato onion? The tag has gotten really bad, and Leo moved the pots. Arghhh! Now they no longer match the map. Now isn't that just silly? Cortona, I've had very poor germination on the Valdichiana. Hopefully Joseph did better. (I have maybe 20 onions? from a 200 tray). The winter portion of this trial is just about over. Some of the onions are being heavily grazed by gophers. Faster M'ma Tusui Faster! Get those gophers. There are a few going straight to bolt without bulbing up, I'm betting these are onions for the North. First couple of spring days and BOLT! I'll post up the numbers and more photos later. Back to farming. Attachments:

Holly,
That look's like the walking onion I gave you (Grandma Pfeiffer's Walking Onion care of Curzio Caravatti of the SSE).
When I inquired after my little green babies a couple months back you said you had them in pots. That looks like it is growing in a pot. Looks just like the the ones in my bed in the back yard.

Well that makes total sense because the tag looks like it says Cruzio...I could not find a Cruzio on my seed list. I had Grandma Pfeiffer's on the list...I guess when we were planting we wrote something short, after reading your letter.
The other is not doing well, and I was looking at my notes, and it said that the one from Martin was doing poorly. M'ma Tusui is using that one to sleep in.
I pasted your note in my farm book, so now we have it all straightened out. Thanks!
