Hey Castanea, Are looking for really big carrots to feed stock with? Are you looking for carrots that grow almost anywhere? If size is the issue, big around or weight? Regards, Holly By the way, I think that big white French Carrot is also at Bountiful Gardens.

I'm looking for the big, fat, heavy, sometimes long, carrots that used to be used to feed stock. I'm not presently intending to use them for stock feed, but want to try to preserve them because they were apparently more vigorous and adaptable than present varieties while still being very tasty.
Thanks Holly.

I've been following this thread for awhile because I would like to grow winter feed for my horses, goats and Longhorn cows. That one from rareseeds.com looks promising. I had my mind made up to grow mangels after watching those BBC farming shows, but I may also try growing this carrot as well.

I've never been around cattle fed chopped mangels, but the feedlots in my home town fed their cattle the mash from processing sugar beets. The cattle fed sugar beet mash stunk much worse than our cattle fed mixed molasses grains and alfalfa hay. Just an observation. Of course, mangels don't have as much sugar in them, so they not produce the horrible manure and methane.

Oxheart for me was 4" across and 6" long. Cannot find seeds for it any more. Last ones I had I tried last year and had 0 germination with 5 year old seeds. oh well. Cannot save seeds here either. we are surrounded by queen annes lace and I am not interested in breeding with wild carrots

That is a nice link Mike.
I notice that they have Purple Dragon, my least favorite carrot variety. Ten years ago it was about the only widely available purple carrot. That "spicy" taste they talk about, I call it "diesel fuel aftertaste with a heaping helping of terrible astringency", but other people liked them very much.
I've had an aversion to non-orange carrots due to Purple Dragon and Nutri-Red (the supposedly high lycopene variety) they both were so foul tasting to my personal taste that I developed an orange only policy.
Getting back to the topic, that Coeur de Rouge looks pretty close to the stock carrot criteria.
Looks like the French are leading the world in carrot varieties for horses!

The Juane de Dobbs is also at Seeds of Italy. I have only found Oxhearts lately in very very small packages at terrible prices.

I have Juane de Doubs available. Treat them right, and give them extra grow time, and they get large.

Among the 13 carrot varieties I grew this year the largest was Yellowstone (this variety is always among the largest for me). In the past I have grown Autumn King which is big too. Recently noticed that Baltimore hybrid is offered of some German seed companies as carrot for horses: www.garten-schlueter.de/images/popup_images/3028.jpgIf you want "big, fat, heavy, sometimes long, carrots" then why not selecting your own out of mass cross. This type of selection should be among the easiest ones.

I have a love-hate relationship with that site. They tell me all about these interesting carrots but don't tell me where to find seed.
