Holly, you could even replant ones you've tasted - lift them and remove the leaves leaving about an inch, cut them in half, eat the bottoms, let the top dry overnight or so and replant the ones you like. Most should reshoot given a reasonable amount of moisture in the soil. That way you could select for shape, colour and flavour.

You remind me of the primary reason for which I dig carrots before replanting for seed production. So that I can select for half-longs. Imperator type carrots are too hard to dig in my soil, so I end up growing Danvers, Chantenay, or Nantes types and more specifically the half-long versionis of them.

Joseph, have you tried the GUÉRANDE carrot? I think its english name is OXHEART. «It worked very well for me in pottery clay in Ontario. And despite its size, it keeps being very good even when large. And it is a great juicer. I know people love beautiful sexy baby carrots, but if I had to end up with only one carrot on a desert island, this would be the one I would chose. It sizes fast too. Here she is: www.kokopelli.asso.fr/boutic/bou_list.cgi?codefam=carKokopelli says it needs water to size up but it is an early carrot nonetheless and it behave very well in my clay, it simply pushed itself up. Mind you, my soil was also amended. I noticed that carrots grown with radishes( I always put radishes in my rows) have it easier. During a heat wave, I once let some weeds take over, and the non weeded area was the only one where my new carrot seed bed germinated.

I haven't tried the GUÉRANDE. Thanks for the recommendation. My carrot landrace just sort of happened. I didn't plan ahead or collect germplasm from all over. It's whatever I picked up locally at the seed store.
