Commercial potato tops are routinely sprayed with herbicide to kill them once the crop has reached the desired size/yield. That triggers the potatoes to harden up and go dormant, switch from a "new potato" to something they can dig mechanically and toss around without the skins peeling off. Yes indeed. Newcomers to the county wonder what the heck is going on with the dead fields. I suppose they blame our power plants LOL.

Well I have broken down and figured in 4 beds of sweet corn. I am buying a jab stick seeder to plant the corn through plastic so I won't have to weed. That should work very well as long as I don't poke my drip irrigation lines! So now I am working on whether to plant the corn every other bed with spring/fall greens or plant the beds next to each other.
