Okay folks,
I'm sending out squash seed to the following folks:
Gabriel
Wood'N Stake
Joseph
Raymundo
Templeton
Drahkk (too)
So, if you can't plant these till next Spring, put them in a jar with desiccant and put them in the fridge.
Some of these seeds have only 5 seeds. So, I don't recommend breaking them. What JL Hudson recommended was:
Seed Germination: To germinate seeds put 2 ozs. of 3% hydrogen (H2o2) peroxide into a pint of distilled water. Soak the seeds for 8 hours. This is to prevent fungal diseases.
Seeds need water and oxygen to germinate, so are best started in a light, loose soil that will not compact, get soggy, or crust over. Free flow of water and air are a must. Cover seed with 2 - 4 times their thickness of soil. Plant flat seed edgewise. Lightly tamp soil to insure good contact with the seed, unless heavy. Keep soil moist, not soggy, and do not allow to dry out.
TEMPERATURE
Most seeds germinate best at warm (70°F) temperatures.
Your best approach is to be sure they are planted under optimum conditions of soil warmth and moisture, and plenty of nutrients when young, as they may be weakened by age. Also, the plants may not reach full potential until the second generation, as old seeds generally produce lower yields, so don't judge the plants by any poor yields obtained the first season.
Okay, so I'm sending everyone out the same seeds. I've divided up all the seed amongst us. Templeton, I know that you do squash, so since Ray volunteered, I elected you. I'm hoping that if one of you lose a variety, you are only a post card away from each other. Also, the way the world is going, I don't know how long I can keep sending seeds to OZ/NZ and points across the pond.
I kept back five of each seed to start here.
I'll mail these out next week.
Striped Guatemalan
Indian Vining Zucchini
Mexican X top
Solid Green Cushaw
White Pepita Cerveza Belize
Mexican Calabasa Taos
There were 3 packets of which there were only 4-6 seeds left. I'm not sending any of those out.
Also in this package, I'm sending out a small pack of "Little Green Seed" naked seed squashes (pepo). Since LI Seed has not come back on line, I'm not sure that any of these will be available again, so I'm sending them along as insurance.
You all have a good time with these.
