I have a nice little field of Dahlia pinnata (thanks orflo) and Dahlia merkii seedlings along with some tubers though I'm still on the lookout for heritage varieties and always interested in tradsies for other species . Anyhow, I am interested in some companions for them to look pretty and that will grow well: edible or useful preferred but I've been known to grow the other kind too . I was thinking of something that deters slugs perhaps not that it's a great big problem in my sandpit garden. I have a bunch of chamomile growing nearby and some iris because they go into flower later. Others?

I'm a sucker for just about any flower in the vegie garden. How about a bell flower or two (Platycodon)?

Bellflowers would look nice and they are earlier in bloom generally. I have a flat of mixed varieties though they are still itty bitty.

Any annual asters in the seed bag, ottawa? Asters tend to work together and share resources to an extent. That would be my suggestion. Also, late season vining flowers like Black Eyed Susan vine maybe?

I'm sure there are asters in the seed bag. I'd be surprised if somehow I missed those. Don't' have any black eyed susan vines though.

Having no idea whatsoever of its suitability to your purpose, I'll note that I'm very fond of columbine; also, I think Russell lupines are devastating (even Monty Python likes 'em!).
