I can't imagine why corn would protect squash from gophers, but nothing ventured, etc. I expect to plant a lot of corn this year, so the squashes go in with it. Looking back, I think the gophers were hell on my fragrant melons, while it was ground squirrels and voles that attacked the squash, I think.
