Well, I'm working on next year and I'm thinking some of these melon baskets could be used to grow peanuts.
Varieties? Recommendations?

Good question Holly. Damn girl, your timing is off! It's to late to get seed for you here.
What exactly are you looking for? Quality wise I mean. We are aiming for large, 3 to 4 peas per pod. This question kinda flies in my face cause I'm scrambling my brains for answers but it isn't peanut time so I don't have it in my brains.....
Can you wait till next year and I'll get seed for you?

Here in Ontario it's "Valencia". We have the right soil for them, but usually our summers are a little short for us to get the crop ripe. Of course, this was the year we got ours in late. *sigh* www.oscseeds.com/detail/index.php?Proid=1885

Try Tennessee Red Valencia from Southern Exposure. It tolerates drought, heat, and heavy soil better than most. Tastes really good too. Yield could be better, but it's very reliable.

Southern Exposure has a nice selection of peanuts but won't send peanuts to California.

Oh, that's right. Well, does Sand Hill ship there? Their Bramling Pink does about as well.

My valencia got eaten by something. I would love to try some of the varieties I've seen sold down south but they don't ship them up here. Last year, I got a small crop from pre sprouted seeds.

Gee, I was sending my peanuts to a secret friend in OK, who would forward them on, after taking a few out of each package. I just don't know what the heck to buy.
Redwood City Seeds has some. But I know nothing about peanuts. It's a whole new goobery crop for me.

Would I have to jump through any major hoops to send some to California or Canada myself? I'm testing 4 different varieties now, and I'd be happy to share seed.

I love peanuts, especially boiled with tons of salt and spices. If it tells you anything, I ate 1/8 of last year's 100 ft harvest in one night by myself. They don't compete well with weeds, but they give a lot of food value for their size and input requirements. Plus, I love digging them up and finding big clumps of pods underneath.

My assumption is that peanuts may have some disease issue that could negatively impact the California goober crop. Having never heard of peanuts being a significant crop in Cali, I'm sure I don't know what that's about. Being of a generally irresponsible bent in relation to agribusiness, I'm all in favor of spreading peanutty goodness west of the Sierras. I would suppose all that would be necessary to send peanuts to Cali would be to mail them, not pointing out that they're peanuts (verboten!). Sometimes it's better to just not point out to a bureaucrat that you're doing something he is obligated to fuck with.

Steev, oh you are so right.
I just got home and I am in an ugly mood.
As of today CSA's are unregulated and the only way to sell veges without the gubermint interfering. At the end of the month CAFF is going to give a talk locally about how all this is going to change.
Apparently the state sees me as a revenue source.
I'm not buying it. And I may give up selling, well at least legally. I will have to lose my blog (unfortunate). I will no longer deliver to a drop off point. I'll go to the talk and let you know what I find out.
Some of the rumors are: Restaurant quality (FSA approved) washing sinks. Separate Hand washing facilities. No produce on the ground (gee where does it come from?) On site porta-potties.
And fees fees fees...and if I know my county, we-are not takling about peanuts.
The talk is not till the end of the month.

If you are in California or Canada and want to be legal, buy raw peanuts at any health store. Might not be a suitable variety for Canada but they'll grow. I've grown a Virginia variety for a few years but couldn't get them this year. A friend in Mississippi saved the day as neighbor has a 40-50 acre field. She picked up some that were spilled and sent them up to me. No idea what the variety is but they are shorter and fatter than the Virginia and may be for processing. Unlike previous years when the plants were upright, these are staying close to the ground and spreading to almost a foot across after less than 2 months from planting. Also began blooming about a month after emergence. Looking forward to what I find under them this fall as I suspect that they will be quite prolific.

In California it's usually a 50/50 split between a real disease issue on one hand and incompetence or corruption on the other. With regard to peanuts, I don't know what the issue is.
