I read an interesting research publication yesterday...
The researchers were evaluating a squash variety which is claimed to be an inter-species hybrid. I don't remember the exact details, but they manually pollinated the variety in question with 3 species of squash. Two of the crosses resulted in complete failure. One of the crosses resulted in abundant seeds. Using this test, they were able to determine the species of the squash. They also concluded that it was not an inter-species hybrid.
I suppose that I aught to apply this test to the "White Hopi" squash that I have. I've been wondering if it's really a mixta and not a maxima at all.
