Hi again!
Don't you just hate the newbies' questions?
Anyway, while skipping through the net trying to find out what happened to Kent Whealy I came across some posts indicating there is some animosity between Tomatoville and Tomatoland (actually, I'm not sure I got the names right). Not wishing to step on any land-mines nor get involved in stressful boards, I thought I'd ask you fine folk. You all seem to have your heads screwed on right.
Thanks, Pugs

Wish I could help, but this is the only forum I frequent. I read some of Idig stuff, just for the fun of it, and I know there is bad blood between some of the Tomato folks, but I don't know the details. Seems a shame to me that people who like to play in the dirt would be so contentious, but I guess that is just human nature. Most people here are friendly and have a lot of knowledge to share, so don't ever be afraid to ask anything. I have never seen a mean reply to anyone here, like you will sometimes see other places. I don't know all the details, either, but something to do with people being banned, blahblahblah, bad blood and hard feelings, and some holier than thou attitudes. Politics is politics, I guess, whether it's tomatoes or federal powers. I am a member of Tomatoville, but I'll admit, I rarely visit there. I am also a member at Idig, and find myself less inclined to visit as well. I still visit Gardenweb, but usually Canadian and Brug forums. It all gets kinda silly after a while, the pettiness, and self agrandissement, and really what's the point? Maybe someone else will enlighten you, I'm sorry I don't really know much about it, and know more than I care to!

My advice is to not stir up trouble and let sleeping dogs lie. I would suggest that you join BOTH. Glean off allllll the info on tomatoes you can! They both have wonderful people who know so much about tomato growing. If you must stir the pot so to speak...do some searches at Idig parts of the story are there. The most important thing to know is that it has NOTHING to do with tomatoes. And no I am not taking a side I am a member at one..probably not at the other but that alas is ANOTHER story. THEY both rock! So join! ;D ;D Also check out the SSE site it is going to be a good forum.

I will stir the pot...gently. And this is a very simplified version.
The founding of Tomatoland stems from a disagreement between the owner and one of the moderators at Tomatoville and some folks who were, at the time, members of Tomatoville. The disagreement was over some comments made in a chat room that was not a part of Tomatoville. However, the owner of Tomatoville felt that since, in his opinion, we represented the community of Tomatoville, he had the right to censor that speech in that chat room. That is the gist of the founding of TomatoLand. There was a underlying series of events and prior disagreements between the owner of Tomatoville and some of the founders of TomatoLand. These led to the schism that ultimately lead to the split. The reality is, not all folks get along. Rena is right that there are good folks at both sites, and you will learn a lot if you are new to gardening. I don't believe in hiding the dirty laundry, I figure you need to know the basics of what happened. In the end, some good folks got burned for no good reason that I can see. And I would not mention TomatoLand at Tomatoville.

Deep seated Freudian fears and animosity. Read a few threads and well...it's a study on control, communication, out of context translation and obvious personal vendettas that have made many of the administrators paranoid and reactive. It's a shame in a Garden forum. Others have it labeled as over controlling zealots versus "misfits". Best to just talk tomatoes or squash unless you are thick skinned and don't mind abuse My two cents.

Hey, Earl. I thought that you were the Ohio Earl but you're in Northern MI? Whereabouts?

"And I would not mention TomatoLand at Tomatoville. "
I disagree. I think it would be useful for people to mention TomatoLand at Tomatoville, and also the other way round. Just for the sake of comparison.

pugs, Tomatoville and Tomatoland have distinctive and different personalities to the boards themselves as well as the personalities involved. What might work for some won't work for others. That's where a choice is good. No problem with that.

Thank you all for the responses. I'll have to think about joining either. I'm sure there are knowledgable people in both forums. Neither forum will let you lurk. I like to know what I'm getting into before joining though.
Again, thanks.

If size pushes your button Tomatoville is the larger of the two (three). If discourse and playful humor floats your boat SCM_Froup, or TomatoLand will work better. This is just a sampling of Non-Garden Web spin offs, as is here.
As far as talking about one site in the other; you will end up pegged as being antipithetic to TV by doing that.

Pugs, since neither site is a fee based site, and you can join and quit at will, heck, give one a try, see what you need to see, then give the other a try and see what ya like. I am at TL and here, occasionally lurk at GW and that suits me. Others swear that TV is the best site for tomatoes in the world. Give em both some thought. I dont even know what antipithetic means, geeze Tom.
