Drahkk, How is you Dad? Hope he is doing well. He's back home in Mississippi! He was actually released last Tuesday, and he and mom stopped by here to visit on their way back home. He lost a lot of weight he really didn't have to lose, but he's slowly gaining some of it back. He's supposed to wear a mask in public, and he's on a restricted diet, all on doctor's orders to protect his new lungs, plus protect his kidneys from the stress of all the anti-rejection drugs. But all that was expected. Stubborn old mule is planning on going back to work next week! We're just SO happy to have him home with most of his strength back. Thank you (and everyone!) for your prayers and concern. MB

Seeded and tasted my first couple of Orange Bell today. I ate as much as I put in the freezer. Dar, you were right. That's the first bell I've tasted that I honestly think I could just eat whole right off the plant. Sweet, fruity, and delicious; definitely a keeper.

Tasted and seeded some of these today: They came to me as sweet Fefferoni. They do develop some mild spiciness when fully red and starting to dry, but true to the tag they have zero heat at the green stage where most get picked. To me, the red ones taste the best though, and they don't really have enough flesh to be of much use as a sweet pepper. Aside from no heat, the only difference I've noticed from the standard hot variety is that they ripen to red rather than yellow. They'd probably make great pickled peppers, either in a sweet pickle on their own or as decoration in a jar of dill cukes. MB

DO let your Dad go back to work, if he's so inclined.
What else has a man to do?
Might not be a job, as a payday thing, but inability to productively work is deadly to a man.

Like I could stop him, now that he's physically able and has the idea in his head.
I think he'll be fine, though. It's not like he's still driving a delivery route in a hot, dusty truck. He did his time at that; he's the warehouse manager now, which means he'll spend most of his time in the office. And all those guys at United Produce know exactly what he's been through, and have been supportive the whole time. They'll watch out for him. One of the benefits of working for a small, privately owned business.

The Sieva limas have become more like Seymour from Little Shop: Here's a side shot of the two beds hopelessly entangled and trying to take over everything near them: Of those Pećka melons I mentioned earlier, only three seeds germinated (though you wouldn't know it now). Two are making fruit like this: while the other is coming out similarly shaped, but with dalmatian spots: Wiz, (or anyone else for that matter), have you grown these before? Do they naturally have some variation like that? And most importantly, how do you know when these are ripe? On a somewhat related note, I didn't plan my raised beds very well this year. They are back to being the primary garden, but when I planted they just got whatever I had small quantities of that didn't fit in the big garden I tried to plant up at Mr Prince's. Now, though, I'm really starting to question the logic and/or sanity of planting pole beans, melons, sweet potatoes, and winter squash in the same 200 square foot area. Parts of it are getting very hazardous to walk through... MB

Holy cow, Drahkk. I was all excited because mine have discernable baby fruits and not just blossoms now. Were yours fuzzy as infants?

I'll check them for any more female blooms tomorrow to verify, but I'm pretty sure they were fuzzy, yes. I didn't keep good notes, but they were producing male blooms (LOTS of them) for at least three weeks before I saw the first female, and longer than that before any fruit actually set. I was beginning to wonder if I'd get anything from them. Now, though, that biggest one is bowling ball sized with deep ribs, and seems to have stopped getting larger. Now I'm just wondering how to tell when they're ready. No idea if they'll slip, change color, develop an aroma, or none of the above. Just have to wait and see, I guess.
Glad to know someone else is growing them too! It'll be interesting to see if yours have different rind patterns as well. I'll keep you posted on signs of ripening.

Well I'll let you know if mine actually make it that far along. Any melons I grow here need to have a sense of purpose - no lollygagging, or they are going to be caught still unripe when fall comes. And as you noted, these definitely lollygagged for a while.

Were yours fuzzy as infants? Affirmative, very much so. And on closer inspection, the adults still are too. It's just less obvious due to their size. Check it out: MB

Ahh, yes. That's what I have. The first picture, I mean. The second is still some anxiety-producing time off in the future yet.

Drahkk, I gave you the first seeds, I've never planted because we failed, I do not have the necessary conditions to grow and I saw the earlier entries to plant them, so I sent PECKA melon. I do not know anything about it except that it is beautiful flavor. If you decide to plant, I know that I find with you, heheheh I hope you understand written
