Have one out of 30 sown . Probaly a good seedling since I have neglected light on hot days, gotten to 90 a couple of days, and the pots dried out twice but it was misted.

Forgot to ask. What happens if the oca seed is planted in the fall. Will it tuberize as a tiny seedling?

It appears that plants have to be about ten inches tall before they form tubers. Plants that were smaller than that going into winter are still alive. Plants that were larger formed tubers and died back. Plants that were right on the cusp have formed small tubers but didn't die back. I'm not sure if they will continue to grow next year or sprout and form additional plants.

Oca tubers are sprouting for real, this time; the seedlings are still slowly growing.

Richard, Cesar, anybody else from NZ: Do you know if there is a listing of the NZ oca varieties anywhere? I've picked up half a dozen varieties this year all described as "NZ oca" and I'm sure that they must have names. It would be nice to sort that out. I was under the impression that there are just a few varieties, but maybe I'm wrong about that. Are there heirloom/garden varieties in addition to the commercial varieties? I'm still surprised about how little information is on the 'net about the NZ ocas. It is like you guys are trying to keep them secret. I hate renaming things and the inevitable confusion that follows.

Really there is not many heirloom 'NZ yams' as we call them here, they probably being incorrectly misnamed as 'NZ oca' because there's never been that many here, the four different colours i grow came to me from a old guy by the name of Henry Harrington who's now dead, these had no names, the collection held by Koanga are of the the same clones and are unnamed. Even new cultivars grown by the commercial fella'a there's not that many ,there's one called 'Inca Gold' that you see in the supermarkets and a red skin one that i cant seem to find its name, other than that i dont know of any other listings,Cesar might have more ideas....come in Cesar.

I will do some research on the ones with names and post them here soon. Cheers, Cesar

Here are some new ocas that died over the winter. Puny tubers since the plants didn't live very long, but they're starting to sprout, so I'll have plenty of material to work with. These are from Hopin x Sunset. Quite a bit of color variety, although several look a lot like the parents.
