I'm starting to worry about what I need to do with this stuff; it really seems to want to flop over and do its thing, but I've got it in pots. I'm thinking beds, next year. It's really looking like a "staple" crop.

Scored a very nice, but unloved, rose; going to pot it up, I was recycling potting soil from pots that had failed plants; both the pots which had been "disappeared" seed-grown oca contained small, but healthy, tubers, so once more around the park.

That's great, Steev - you get a much more robust plant from even a small tuber. Dormancy may be a problem though. Some wake up pretty quickly; some don't. I've found that a 20 minute dip in a 30PPM giberellic acid gets the stubborn ones going.

I'll not waste giberellic acid on them; I'm the one needs a kick-start.
Being in no rush, it's just gratifying not to have lost them; they're re-potted and won't again be consigned to the potting-mix recyclery without a thorough sifting. Interesting how touchy the plant can be when disturbed, croaking right down to the tuber. The one that didn't "die" has been potted up again, and thrives!
Although I really doubt oca's ability to survive on the farm, I look forward to having enough material to gamble.

First two harvests: The plate is 8 inches from rim to rim. This one is a seedling that decided it had enough for the season.

I think you might have a winner with the first one, Cesar. Good size, no nodules, nice color. The second one looks like it lost its roots.
Have any of your seedlings flowered?

The first one did and is self fertile, mid style and gave me 7 seeds.

That's awesome. Considering how late you finally got the seeds, I'd say you did very well.
Here's to a second generation from seed in NZ!

Got impatient and excited, dug out three seedlings that were showing signs of yellowing.

You seem to have gotten great variety; the three seedlings I got seem, so far, much more uniform.

Just wondering. Anyone who was grown seedlings do you find that they are more likely to flower? That usually holds true for many cloned plants (ex:shallots).

Great work here! Cezar, that first one on the plate looks wonderful, the second one is quite likely to produce less uniform, wobbly tubers in future (I mostly delete these, unless they have an other very good characteristic (earliness, and sometimes I'm seduced by the colour as well :-) ). I had a report from a friend in Belgium, and one of his ocas has started to flower as well, that's also a very early start of the flowering season.. Bill, I may be able to name the variety, but only based on the tubers. Although the stems do all have a different colour, it's hard to tell from a picture, sunlight, camera, and so on can give a not true to colour image. And many varieties are mid-styled...

Unfortunately, I don't have very good pictures. Here are the three varieties that came as 1113: The yellow one is the correct one, I trust, since it came from you. The top, red one I suspect is actually 1119, since that would be an easy mistake. The oca in question is the light pink one, lower left.

Indeed, 1113 is the yellow one, the red one on top is hard to tell if it's 1119, the tubers of 1119 are a quite uniform sort of dark pinkish red, and I get the impression that the colour on this one isn't so uniform...The pale pink one looks nice, but I can't tell you the origin of it..Owen once had one that looked quite similar to this, so who knows..?
