Any other possibilities I'm missing to try? Joyce always starts were root vegetables in July because she's growing for the root cellar and wants an early fall harvest to let frost make them sweeter. Last year with the drought, starting in July was a big problem. Early morning watering didn't help because the soil surface was bone dry by 10 am. So she covered them with row cover just to keep the sun off the soil. She kept the row cover about 2" off the soil. It worked. Germination was very good. With the same early morning watering, the soil was still moist at 2 in the afternoon.

I really like Joseph's and Richard's idea of planting the carrot seeds deeper, I just do that all the time, with seeds that need to be covered, mostly by accident, it is so hard to plant real shallow, in my experience.
The hot water idea did work for me, then i let them soak over night, and planted the next day, except sometimes i got the water too hot, then it was bye-bye carrots. Though, with your opposite experience, Ottawa, it could be, I just watched over them more carefully, like checking and watering twice a day, as i had gone to all the trouble to add hot water, then soak, and the hot water/soak may have had nothing to do with the improved germination.

The jars finally sprouted after about a week so much slower then the cardboard pre sprouting method. I have all my seeds out now so we'll see how the rows develop. I have seedling eaters so that's a challenge too.
