I pulled my F1 babies from a purple maternal parent (3 Colors Purple) grown with Baby (orange), Lobbericher (yellow,) and Belgian White (white). The pearly colors seem to be purple in varying degrees over a pale sub-skin layer, just visible in some of the close ups. All have the purple leaf bases. Doesn't seem to be any self pollinations interestingly. This is the whole cohort - not enough to tell what's going on with the genetics, except that it looks pretty interesting. These are off to the fridge for a few days, then to be transplanted next to my French Rounds, in search of coloured balls in the next few generations. T

Wow, that's a lot of variety.
Light Pink carrots with white flesh are not something I've seen before!

Looks like bite marks to me... Tasting the carrots to make sure that they taste great before using them as a seed parent? I harvested my Astronomy Domine sweet corn seed a few days ago. Photos later today I hope. I harvested it earlier than normal due to heavy pressure from corn predators (skunks?, racoons?, cats!, birds?). It was still young enough to be edible, so I tasted every cob as I was picking it. I really liked the opportunity to select for taste this year. I sure moved the genepool in the direction of slow starch conversion (sweeter cobs), and tender kernels.

Just caught up with the purple carrot thread,am hoping Rowan will offer some advice. I was pleasantly surprised when I pulled them up. The little bite marks are actually knife marks - I had to see what the colour underneath was. The photos don't show the scale - these are little fellas, size of my little finger.

Didn't want to hijack your thread. My coloured carrot experiment (crossing all my colours) turned out exactly like yours first time around, The next generation after had many more white ones (white is dominant) so when I let them all cross together I pulled most of the whites first. I am just starting to pull some of the latest generation and am getting a lot of purples (yellow or orange inside) but they are not colouring up till they are larger so I thought they were all light coloured at first. This experiment is just a fun thing for me with no planned results. I am loving the pink and purple blushed roots and those with red 'eyes'. I don't have sensitive taste so they all taste the same to me.
My purple carrot breeding trial I can't really comment on yet. I am trying to breed an open pollinated fully purple carrot. I crossed deep purple with purple dragon and saved seed mostly from the Deep purples. The roots I am pulling up from that cross are all like purple dragon with dark purple skin and yellow inside. I will have to wait to see if I get any with pollen producing flowers but I am not hopeful after trying it with red choy. I am not being very 'scientific' with this yet, I am just learning about breeding and thought this would be an interesting learning experiment.
Will post up pictures tomorrow as I will be pulling some of both lots for a market.

I was going through my carrot growout bed the other day and found 2 deep purple carrots, that appear to be purple right through - I scratched the skin. Then I remembered I'd bought them from my organic shop as a potential seed parent - must make better notes! If they turn out to be CMS, too bad, will have to try something else. T

Here are a couple of pics of my carrot experiments I took yesterday. Please excuse the hairyness of the carrots as we are coming out of winter and they are always hairy after pulling from wet ground. Here is a pic of the first 20 from my cross of Deep Purple and Purple Dragon. I did not get any that were purple all the way through but I have replanted those that were purple at least half way through and had purple stems or leaves. About 10% were orange-ish. Here is a picture of my carrots from the seed of a mixed cross of all my colours F2 (I don't have any beds of the F1 for pictures) The F1 carrots were mostly white so I pulled most of the white ones before they flowered so I have a lot more purple ones in this lot. I note that there were quite a few 'blushed' colours in the F1 but less of the blushed in this lot and more with definite bicolours and coloured 'eyes', a few light pink/oranges, and a few with the top half purple and the bottom half white. It is getting interesting.

I've reorganised my beds, trying to compact the space for my breeding projects so I've actually got enough room to grow something to eat. I've dug up and replanted the blushed carrots pictured above, along with my winter grown French Rounds, some organic shop full purples, and some '3 colour purples' that I grew over winter. A few Lobbericher around the outside, and I've pulled all the Belgian Whites - there should be enough white genes in the blushed F1s. Hoping for some mature F1XF1 seed to plant next autumn.
