Asparagus

I think I am going to go ahead and plant asparagus next year. My landlords make me feel pretty permanent now. How much can go in one of my 50x3 foot beds? Is that a worthwhile amount?

Worthwhile depends on how many mouths you're trying to feed. Bear in mind that with asparagus, you're looking at at least two years (from planting one-year crowns) before you get even a token return. People who cut those pencil-thin stalks are just delaying the arrival of the good stuff, as thick as your thumb.
That reminds me; I need to rip the females out of my patch so they don't drop seed all over, making it all self-seedy weedy with teeny plants; maybe I'll just cut and discard their fronds.

I reckon there's enough room there for about 36 plants.2 wide.
