Apparently saffron doesn't produce fertile seed, but with some of the experience of people on this forum, perhaps that is not a certain thing in the future

Supposedly sterile. Would have thought someone has had a go at crossing it back to it's wild ancestor(s) given the price of saffron and the opportunity of getting something economically valuable.

I sent some saffron bulbs to Jo in NC and it managed the change in seasons quite well. I don't know whether she planted it as soon as it arrived or whether she waited until autumn. Perhaps she'll chime in here.
From what I've read, saffron is triploid so seed production is unlikely. I wonder if doubling the chromosome number would restore fertility. Of course, doubling may render it useless as a crop plant but you never know.

I received some Antipodean Saffron as well. I've plunked them in a pot so I can keep an eye on them....I'll let you know when they flower.

How much cold can the bulbs stand in the ground? Does anyone know? (Sorry, I have the flu and no mental energy for doing searches right now!)

It seems that they can handle frosts as low as -10C 14F and brief periods of snow cover

How big were your bulbs, richard? I've got a bag full of pea sized corms just starting to shoot and I'm scratching my head about where I'm going to plant them. might have to throw them out... T
