Both too dry and too hot; they're on my short-list of things to try again when I'm on-site more, with persimmons, walnuts, and pecans.

I've had a couple of gooseberry bushes in the garden for about 3 years, and they've not had a single flower on them. Yet I remember the lady next door growing them - with fruit! - when I was a kid, so they do grow here.

I've got two persimmon trees in, and I suspect if you've found it too cold for them, it's going to be worse for me further south. Do you have any specific varieties you've planted and found unsuccessful?

Just because you are south of me doesn't mean its automatically going to be more difficult to grow certain things, for here about every ten years this valley gets hit by a ripper frost and things like Lemons,Persimmons and grafted only Feijoa's are killed,at least with Lemons they coppice back again though,i'm not prepared to go to the expense of buying Persimmon trees to have then do well for 9 year or so then ..bang they're dead.

Just been out and picked some and have made a brew......hmmmm not to bad either,as you can see i'm not sort on yarrow, pretty much grows every where and does so well thanks to the copious amount of water i apply to the orchard area. That's more yarrow than I've ever seen in one place! Here you'll find an occasional plant sticking up in between the wild brambles. My area is mostly shady forest and cornfeilds, that limits where the yarrow can grow.

Wonder why it doesn't become as persistent as it does here, that area of yarrow in the photo has grown so much matter over the years that its like walking on a bed mattress.

I don't know... differences in climate or ecological factors? A lot of competition from other plant life?
I lot of the land here is barren cornfeild or forest, few people see the point in keeping a meadow. (We're in a soaking wet valley.) Is New Zealand more open and sunny?

richardw: in response to your being overrun by yarrow, I am sending you two (2) pair of gophers (they love yarrow); I assure you, you do want to be careful they don't get into your other plantings, as they can be a total PITA. Don't thank me, really; I just want to share.

I'm happy to report that seed from the three differently treated gooseberry seed i sowed before winter is garmenting, some was sown direct, some spent two months in the fridge before sowing and the third had boiling water poured over it before sowing,so ,interesting that seed is coming from all three.

Re persimmons: I don't recall which sort you're trying; the Fuyu seem to do well with least cold, the American with the most.

Yes ,ive got one seed to grow from the Fuyu variety (Diospyros Kaki),they do quite well in this country, have been told though that the fruit maybe full of seed, time will tell if that is the case.
