First tomatoes (plants from WalMart) ripening. I'm afraid they're a little ahead of my seed started ones. If I can get 'em to migrate south for the winter, maybe I'll get early tomatoes in the spring. Green beans are starting to bloom. It's my first time with the scarlet runners, so those red blooms are nice to see. Squash bugs killed all my squash except for one or two moschatas. (Replanted today.) Looks like I'm gonna have at least two of those football or blimp shaped ones like last year. Also finished planting sweet corn (and half-sweets to detassle) today. Also did some more mulching and planted the cucumbers and proto heat tolerant shelling peas.

Lovely batch of thistles; sorry about that.

Everything is looking great. Garlics doing well. Good luck on getting seed. Hopefully all your bad luck was spent on the thistles me squash bugs. I had them last year and they are a pain. I used a soap and water mixture. I want to say that it was a few drops in a spry bottle. It worked pretty well. Also I've heard that diatomaceous earth works great. I haven't tried it though

DE is great on things that are tender, not chitinous.

I have some... volunteers I found while weeding the corn bed. I know what they resemble, but they have never volunteered here before. I put 'em in pots so I can observe 'em, but what do you guys think they are?

I put 'em in pots so I can observe 'em, but what do you guys think they are? Okay, so I got my hopes up too quick... Despite what the leaves look like, I didn't have sweet potato tubers overwinter, and I didn't produce TSPS without noticing. It was unlikely anyway, and the stems seemed too fat and too short. One finally bloomed, and now I recognize it. Volunteer buckwheat.

Hopefully all your bad luck was spent on the thistles me squash bugs. Nope. The one moschata that survived the squash bugs now has wilted horribly. I found frass next to a hole in the stem near the ground. Vine borer. I poked at it with a paper clip. Never saw any blood, but don't see how I could've missed. Got my doubts it'll recover in this weather. Wonder if those green fruits might still ripen. Or if they could be used as a summer squash now.

The poor grape vine is producing edible fruit now, though quite a bit has to be culled. I removed what was obviously bad. This was left. Finally got what remains of my seed started six packs into the ground. If frost doesn't come early, I may see a fruit or two. About a half-dozen each of tomatos and sunflowers, a single cotton, and 17 mild peppers. Every row of corn is up now. Ranges from 4"-8" maybe. I'll probably reseed what didn't come up in the pollen rows.

First well developed lagenaria gourd. Presumably dipper; it doesn't look like birdhouse. Check out these jacked up lookin' beans! I think they're trying to present a smaller target to grasshoppers and Japanese beetles. At least most of them look normal. A few even reach a respectable size. Garlic chives are coming into bloom. Guess I need to weed 'em now, since I can tell 'em from the grass. Found a couple uprooted garlic bulbs. One had a de-bulbiled scape. I forgot some of you guys put the scapes in water. I think I cut this off too short. How do I know if it's ready to take apart looking for seed?

Continued progress of the "dipper" lagenaria gourds. Proto-heat tolerant peas. Weird, mild August makes this a bad year for selection, with days mostly in the low eighties and nights in the fifties and sixties. None the less, they've stayed green through summer, and have even seen the low nineties a few times now. I first spotted pods yesterday. Another attempt to improve my soil naturally and cheaply. I buried some wood in an attempt to borrow from the idea of hugelculture. Further reading has shown me that I didn't understand too well. I expect little benefit, but no harm from it. Provided I'm mindful of the source of some of the wood until it can break down. I'll probably broadcast sew for a few years until that those rose cuttings are gone... Also trying a chop 'n' drop cover crop again. No monoculture this time. That's Imperial No Plow feedplot mix. (Deer are not an issue in my garden. Yet.) Still racing the clock to get some peppers before frost. Starting to think it ain't gonna happen. May have to build a coldframe over the top.
