"Compost-pile" potatoes were what taught me the excellence of fresh-dug spuds.

That's an impressive list.
I started my tomatoes, but found today that the heating cable hadn't stayed plugged in; prolly means they'll start sprouting the coming week-end, getting all leggy; I'm not in control.
Thinking Tuesday I'll seed peppers and eggplants.

That's a lot of tomatoes. Do you segregate your peppers to avoid crossing?

That's a lot of tomatoes. Do you segregate your peppers to avoid crossing? I use bags when I need to save seed for a pepper. I will hand pollinate from different plants and then bag too but also let them self. I saw that some of the garlic you sent started coming up today!

Most of the tomatoes are up and a few peppers are as well. I started getting some of the beds ready. I'm thinking I will direct sow to cabbage, Brussel sprouts, and kohlrabi soon. I haven't decided if I want to grow potatoes or bulging onions this year either. I guess I should choose before it's too late to plant them. I also got tiller. Well I have had it for a few years but it has never run well. So I had a friend fix it up. It's probably 30 years old but I got it for free and spent 40 bucks to get it going. It runs great now.

So far I have potted up 4-5 tomato varieties. The seedlings I didn't use I planted by the compost pile. I doubt they have a chance but I figured why not. A lot of the tomatoes and peppers I started still have not come up and I'm having problems with gnats. Plus I don't have a heating mat which doesn't help. So a week or so ago I decided to pre germinate them in small seeds bags wrapped in paper towels. So far I have had 3 start to germinate. I have also added a few from my original grow list due to no germination.

Oh gnats. Can't stand the things. Over the winter my plants under grow lights were badly infested. I put up more and more sticky traps, but could never get ahead of them. Eventually, I put the mosquito net that I used while traveling in Africa over the lights and plants and everything. The gnat numbers are way down now. Presumably, by being trapped in a smaller area with a bunch of traps, a lot end up dying before reaching sexual maturity.
By the way, the seeds you sent me are doing wonderfully!

I had them really bad over the winter with the potted plants too. I had thought I had them under control but I guess I was wrong.

Here is my official 2016 grow list. All of the below have germinated and are growing. Now I just need to figure out where they a going to go.
Tomato, Goose Creek Tomato, Brandywine, Cowlick's Tomato, Mark Twain Tomato, Abe Lincoln Tomato, Mortgage Lifter, Estler's Tomato, Moneymaker Tomato, Sunset's Red Horizon Tomato, Marianna's Peace Tomato, Summer Cider Tomato, German Johnson Tomato, Reisetomate Tomato, Missouri Pink Love Apple Tomato, Speckled Roman Tomato, Cherokee Purple Tomato, Boxcar Willie Tomato, Jagodka Tomato, Bloody Butcher Tomato, Tom's Landrace Paste Mix Tomato, Bull's Heart Tomato, Amish Paste Tomato, Kellogg's Breakfast Tomato, Siletz Tomato, Pruden's Purple Tomato, Sungold F2 Tomato, Silvery Fir Tree Tomato, Betimes Macbeth 15' (Pot) Tomato, Yellow Cherry (Pot) Tomato, Minibel (Pot) Tomato, Homestead Tomato, German Pink Tomato, Ozark Pink Tomato, Mamie Brown's Pink Tomato, Stupice (for a friend but I have an extra to plant) Pepper Sweet, King of the North Pepper Sweet, Marconi Red Pepper Sweet, Aji Dulce Pepper Sweet, Syrian Three Sided Pepper Pepper Chili, Georgia Flame Pepper Chili, Ancho Grande Pepper Chili, Santa Fe Grande Pepper Chili, Beaver Dam Pepper Chili, Jalapeño Early Pepper Chili, Jalapeño Cross Ground Cherry, Cape Gooseberry Ground Cherry, Husk Tomato Ground Cherry, Physalis heterophylla
These have not germinated yet. There is still a chance for all of them but I don't have my hopes up. I am very disappointed that none of The Dutchman came up. I bought them this winter from Baker Creek. I'm doing a germ test now. I will miss the Jimmy Nardello peppers this summer too. Last year they were our favorite. One pepper was just shy of a foot long.
Tomato, The Dutchman 16' Pepper Sweet, Jimmy Nardello Pepper Sweet, Corno di Toro Giallo Pepper Chili, Hinkelhatz (I'm fairly certain these will come up. I sowed pre-germinated seeds a few days ago)

Great list, kazedwards ! Write Baker Creek and ask for a replacement packet from a different lot. They have been pretty good about that when I have encountered an occasional problem with their seed. Peppers can take a long time and benefit from bottom heat.

Peppers can take a long time and benefit from bottom heat. I thought I would write them. I figured I should do an actual germ test first, just in case it's an issue on my end. This year I have had poor germination across the board.

Well tonight I potted up most of them. The rest I don't think I will. Estler's Mortgage Lifter isn't doing well. It's been getting hit hard with gnats. But all of the others seem to be doing good.

So I was thinking that I might try planting tomatoes really close. Like two plants in the same hole with the holes spaced at 3 feet. What do you guys think?
