Dont have Pukekos either thankfully, though they are pretty bird, copse you would have them having the water channel down the back of your garden? No pukekos here. However, we have lots of water. The ground hasn't been dry enough long enough to dig out any new garden beds, and it's just started summer and it's still raining. Serves me right for not doing it in the Autumn.

I don't feel so bad about my orchard now. With the wet Spring, it's extremely lush grass/dock wise. I gave it a going over with banvine in the hope I can clear out the dock, and some of the californian thistle is looking as effected as the dock, although that's not on the target list. Next time I get a few days when the grass dries enough, I might try and do a trial and see if it consistently works on the thistle and skip the roundup.

Despite the issues with the green gage, do you get much fruit off them?

Looked up that Californian thistle; not big enough in Cali that I've ever noticed it; I think it's really Eurasian thistle.

The last tree crops newsletter had the same problem, where the author was recommended to buy an Angelina Burdette as a pollinator, but found the flowering times didn't match but they eventually found a match in a Purple Purshore. Reading this I took a look at my recommended pollinator, a Coe's Golden Drop, and it was also flowering after my Greengage, which might explain the lack of fruit.

I remember us having this discussion before, its really silly that they should be called 'Californian' when they are not native to California. I see it called Canada thistle too, i wonder what the Canadians call it.

I haven't paid attention to why my greengage is so productive (since maybe six years), but I have several other plums nearby, Japanese types, so who knows? My purple gage is very productive, though rather later; there are other plums near it, prunes, mostly, as well.
As to the Californian thistle, I think the Canadians are too polite to mention it at all, eh?
