I've seen some variations in the strain I grow, mostly in fruit size, and whether or not the berries release easily when ripe. Unfortunately, it is the plants with smaller berries which release easily; I've been selecting for the larger-fruited plants, and hope to stabilize a large-fruited berry that releases easily. A few years ago I had a single plant which whose fruit had a much different flavor, with strong hints of peach. I picked some of the berries to save for seed, but left them in a small can & forgot about them... mice ate them all, and the mother plant had already been killed by frost. At least there does appear to be some variation in flavor, other than the variations caused by harvest temperature.

Zeedman: admirable selection criteria. Shame about the nice flavoured one. Was it red?
I've seen some variation in coloration of ripe fruit as well.

I grew some about 18 years ago that had great flavor. I do not remember where I got the seeds. The plants were also somewhat cold hardy and made it through the winter. The next year the plants became massive.
In the last few years I have grown a few and the flavor was definitely not great. I think these were from Baker Creek.
I know they can have great flavor and that's really all I'm looking for. I'm not sure I will have space to grow them this year.

Castanea - ours had good flavour. I can send you some seeds if you'd like. I suppose weather conditions might be a factor too.

I would like some seeds from any that taste good. I may have found a place to plant them this year.

I have some seedlings coming up with green and others with red stems. I'll be segregating to see if that is indicative of anything like purple coloration or not. And I just wanted to be the 10,000 post in this section

I just planted 6. After all the tomatoes, peppers, and other interesting solanums, I didn't want to plant too many quite yet. I planned my numbers around mature plants, so I didn't even think about screening on juvenile traits. I may have to grow another flat to see if any juvenile variations are apparent in the seed I have.
