I'm not familiar with Roscoff's and can't find much on it to be of an help. The smallish bulb thing is often due to length of day. But if they would do well in France, I should think that they'd do well in Canada.
On an aside, grew Mako onions last year and they are storing quite well. Problem there is that they were somehow mixed with Copra and don't know which is which. Then a week-long panic recently when the remaining seed wasn't anywhere to be found. After resigning myself to just having enjoyed them once in my lifetime, they showed up! Plan now is to plant twice as many this year and save a few to produce seeds.

Glad you are enjoying the Mako's, Martin. I should warn you that I am not saving seed for them, but incorporating them into our "landrace". We figure we can only save seed from 3 varieties, given the nature of onions and our garden. So you (or anyone else I gave them to) should save your own seed if you want to keep them going.
Although I will note that Adaptive Seeds have "Maria Nagy's Transylvanian Yellow" and the same in red. I am willing to bet that these are so similar to Mako as to be indistinguishable, since they are from just across the border.
