Welcome to 2015! What's happening on the weather front? How is your garden growing this year?

Cold, getting colder. Some experimental broccoli isn't doing well, to say the least, only two might still be alive. Kale is holding on but not my favorite. Experimental brussels sprouts are hanging on, only two have died and the leaves taste great! Anxious to see if it makes it till spring and starts growing again if it does I will try to get seeds.

BillW, that's a crazy amount of water!
Cold here; -18°C, "-30°C" with the windchill. Fortunately, it's been snowing for the last week or so and there is a reasonable amount of snow (important for insulating plants when it gets this cold). Also fortunately, it is supposed to go back up to -10°C tomorrow; a much more tolerable temperature. Still, booked 2 weeks in Cuba for the middle of February last night - get us outta here!

-7 F this morning -23 C? light breeze so guess wind chill is colder still, plenty cold enough for me. Dog came out of her house, went to edge of porch, saw a little bit of snow, turned around and went back in. Didn't have to pee that bad I guess.

Right now 2 degrees above zero Fahrenheit but there is practically no snow cover on one garden which means the frost is going to go deep this year. Not good news. I hoping for at least a foot of snow soon.

On the farm, temps are now plunging to 28F at night; the first peach blossom opened today.

Steev; well, of course.
It's -12°C at the moment, should get down to -17°C overnight, light snow; should get a daytime hight of 0°C and clearish in about 5 days. This is the exact same forecast we have had for the last week. Something wrong with this picture...

20 F right now, heading to high 40s and sun for the weekend yea! Ground is frozen few inches down so it will be a mess when the surface thaws but still I can build fence, cut wood and stuff like that.

So far NorCal is running the driest January on record; there's still plenty of moisture in the soil, but that's not storage for Summer. Normally we get plenty of January rain, then 4-6 weeks dry and warm, followed by 2-3 months of rain ~every 3 days (that second hump of our rainy season hasn't been that regular for years).
Lots of noise this week about King Tides swamping low-lying areas around the Bay Area; well. duh!; the seas are rising. Last week-end, on my route to the farm, I noted areas of Bayside pasture that I'd never seen flooded before. There're lots of recently-built sub-divisions along there that are NMT ~2' above those pastures (and more construction all the time).
Continues to be lots of fog on the farm, but that doesn't seem to wet enough to sprout seed, nor is it Summer storage.

Inch and a half of rain last night to start off the new year. It snowed three miles up the road this morning (rare) but none here.

Last night on the farm, it only dropped to 48F, 30* higher than I'd expect for a clear January night; no snow to be seen on the Coast Range.

We have had a stretch of 40s and 50s for couple of weeks, no breaking ice for the chickens for quite awhile. Rained all last night and dropped back to 19 F right now. Roads and especially bridges will be a little slippery later this morning. Pretty typical up & down for us.

Northeastern US expecting quite a storm starting later today. Philly is near the edge of the system - we might get a foot of snow but blizzard warnings have been posted from NYC and up the coast past Boston. Winter in earnest!

Not worried at all about the gardeners, now the ones I saw on the news waiting in line to get into the mostly empty grocery store, who knows? Last time our power was out for days I had a great time. Hurricane force wind for 10 hours with beautiful clear blue sky, very interesting. Did get low on food (except dry beans) but that was because we fed half the neighborhood for three or four days. Did you know even if they have some food most town people can't cook without electricity?
On the last day we killed two chickens and emptied the freezer, crab, steak, salmon, green beans, baked potatoes. People brought lots of beer, wine and banjos. As it was getting dark we heard all these weird little buzzes and clicks, little lights started glowing here and there. Crap, it's back.
