Longtime gardener here getting back into the game after sitting out for a few years due to health problems. I am located east of Austin, Texas on the sandy land near the great Bastrop fire of 2011 and the lesser fire of 2015. I was drawn to this particular Forum due to my interest in the more "out of the ordinary" food plants that are hardly ever known or seen in most gardens. No shortage of that here, for sure.

Welcome squonkhunter, I'm in the Texas hill country, too, but on the western most edge where the desert begins. Before this I gardened for over a decade in east Austin on blackland prairie.

What's a squonk? Why would one hunt it? Aren't they from Pennsylvania?

What's a squonk? Why would one hunt it? Aren't they from Pennsylvania? A Squonk is indeed a mythical creature supposed to inhabit the forests of Pennsylvania in days of old. I took my username from the Genesis song Squonk from the album A Trick of the Tail (1976). In the song, the Hunter uses trickery to catch a Squonk, a feat that no person had ever done. In the end, though, the Squonk dissolves itself into a pool of tears, leaving the Hunter with nothing but a story that no one would believe. Kind of a parable about the elusive nature of success in this life. Besides, I just liked the song.

The mythical creature in my part of Texas is the Chupacabra, which means 'goat sucker'. Most of them have tested out to be coyotes with mange. Someone has probably written a song about them.

Well, Genesis song "Squonk" is as good a reason as any for a web-name; my own web-name "steev" is just because I'm a lazy, unimaginative bastard.
