It is that time of year that we are starting to look over seeds stashes and getting ready for next year. I know many of us are also trading seeds and looking for new varieties for next year. So I figured it would be a good time to start a thread like this. I thought we could post what we have or need and see if we can help each other out.

Finalized my list yesterday. Here's the seed that I'm offering this year: All grown in my garden, much of it is highly-diverse locally-adapted landraces. All of it developed and grown under subsistence level growing conditions without cides nor fertilizers. I'm feeling embarrassed this year about not being able to afford postage to do exchanges or gifts like I have in the past. This forum has been my primary support network for plant breeding since before I was a plant breeder, so I'm offering to gift seed to the members of the forum if you can cover postage. Melons Lofthouse-Oliverson Landrace Muskmelon Lofthouse Landrace Watermelon Corn Lofthouse-Astronomy Sweet Corn Harmony Synthetic Composite Grain Corn High Carotene Sweet Corn Tomatoes Lofthouse Short Season Tomato Landrace Ot'Jagodka Tomato Tomato HX-9 Tomato DXX-M Small Grains Feral Winter Rye Lofthouse Wheat, a family heirloom Squash Lofthouse Landrace Moschata, Medium Small Moschata Squash Extra Large Moschata Squash Small Orange/Green Buttercup Squash Landrace Maxima, Medium Landrace Maxima, Small Lofthouse Landrace Cucumber Landrace Crookneck Landrace Zucchini Landrace Mixta Squash Landrace Lagenaria Squash Legumes Lofthouse Landrace Dry Beans Tepary Beans Runner Bean Grex Fava Bean Grex Dutch Brown Dry Bean Cross Greens Spinach Landrace Fennel Swiss Chard Landrace Bok/Pak Choi Grex Roots Landrace Carrots Bountiful Potato Semi-improved Feral Sunroot Lofthouse Sunroot Spices, Herbs, & Medicinals Yellow Mustard-seed Cilantro Broad-leaved tobacco Narrow-leaved tobacco Breadseeds Other Opuntia humifusa Lofthouse Okra, Seconds
I may have other seeds, scions, or bulbils to share with the members of the forum if you have read about something that I am working on and would like a start of it. Variety descriptions are on my web site: lofthouse.com/seed-list.phtmlMy wish-list includes: Interspecies tomato hybrids or segregants Wild tomato species Medicinal herbs Beets: open pollinated only. Cabbage: open pollinated only. Carrot: OP Chantenay Cowpeas Eggplant Garbanzo beans (chickpeas) Physalis peruviana (cape gooseberry) Soybeans Spinach Tepary beans: any variety other than blue/gray specked. Tomatillos Turnip, purple top white globe Landrace varieties of any annual fruit or vegetable. True sweet potato seeds. True garlic seeds. True potato seeds. Puget Sparkle dahlia Colorado Classic dahlia Mingus Toni dahlia Chilson's Pride dahlia
Sorry to propose a swap, and then ask for postage as well, but that's where I'm at this year... And to those of you that know about my troubled personal life over the past year, I'd gladly make the same choice again. My life is filled with peace and tranquility these days, and that's worth the sacrifice.

I prefer "obnoxious", long-winded lists... They seem easier for me to read than attachments.

My life is filled with peace and tranquility these days, and that's worth the sacrifice. Did you end up losing any of your populations in the move? I assume your want list above contains things you'd like just for added diversity, like always. Are there any species in which you'd like to recover your own progress you've made in the past? I know I still have some seeds you've sent me, as well as seeds produced here, but only one generation removed from your seed. If you need some of your own work sent back home, you only need to show us a list.

I prefer the giant list as well. That goes for the want list too. Also welcome to the forum toomanyirons. I does not seem I have done that yet.

oldmobie: Thanks for asking. I have taken advantage of "my own work coming home" from time to time. I don't think that I need to this time. I knew time was limited, so I triaged and took as many of the high value seeds as possible. Most crops were growing in the field, so they were fine. Some of them didn't get tended to properly, and therefore I lost last year's seed crop. That was mostly peas and garbanzos. What I did manage to harvest aughta be highly selected for out-competing weeds. I lost the most recent crop of popcorn. I hadn't shared that yet. Popcorn was wearing on me anyway, because the phenotype is so fussy. I grew flour corn this year because that seems more like a staple to me. I lost a seed crop of turnip-rooted parsnips. They will be naturalized in the yard by now. I still have year old seeds. I lost my turnip seed, however after I grew turnip seed in 2010 turnips became a weed in my garden, so this fall I selected out the best looking of the weeds and am storing them in a root-pit to make seeds next year. How's that for local-adaptation? I lost about 5 varieties of two year old grapes. Easy enough to replace. My older grapes were propagated and shared with the locals, so easy enough to recover. I lost 8 varieties of garlic grown from true seeds. Oh well. Today I planted this year's crop of true garlic seeds. Expecting more in the mail. Mostly I lost herbs, medicinals, and ornamentals. Not things that I have worked on, just things I'd like to plant some day. I lost the graft of my favorite tasting apple tree ever. No worries, the mother is still alive. Don't know where I'll put a graft, but that's just details.

I prefer "obnoxious", long-winded lists... They seem easier for me to read than attachments. You might like mine then, since as a bean collector, my list is long on wind... and probably obnoxious. I seldom post my complete exchange list (for reasons which will become obvious) but this is a good crowd. Gardenweb exchange listI could add my complete soybean list (about 70 varieties at present) if there is any interest.

I made the easy decision of taking most of the commonly available stuff off my list. That knocked the size down, but the page still locks when I click on "create post". There must be a post character limit or something...I will keep reducing lists until it posts. Hmmm . . . hadn't encountered a character limit yet but haven't done a long. long post. Perhaps break the list into halves, like A-K and L-Z, and see if those post?

So zeedman, how do you decide what to leave off of your list? And if you always leave your soybeans off your list, for example, then they will never get distributed out to people. And your seed stock gets older and older... Tom, I agree on all counts. A few serious collectors have acquired many of my soybeans (courtesy of one of those collectors, Victory Seeds now carries most of them) but historically, other than edamame varieties, there has not been much interest in soybeans from gardeners. Many of my soybeans are for processing, so for purposes of brevity, I only make a minor reference to them in the main list. I also do not list older seed with questionable germination, seed with crosses (which I try to eliminate prior to offering), or seed from swaps that I have not yet grown out... because I prefer to trade only seed that I can vouch for. I will add the soybean list later in this thread. Yes, seed age is an issue, and sometimes seed expires before I have a chance to grow it out... which as a preservationist, I find troubling. For that reason, I have already considered building a complete list somewhere, including all the seed in my inventory. It would be about twice the size of the list that I post now. I am still looking for a good - and secure - place to post that list, after my present swap list was nearly lost during Gardenweb's transfer of ownership. Wish that place could be here, but as already discussed on other threads, the future of this site is also uncertain. If there is already a site somewhere for serious collectors, I would post it there... but absent that, I hope to open a page somewhere myself in 2016 (any advice on this topic from the web-savvy would be most welcome). It is worth mentioning that as a rule, few with large collections (including some on this forum) have chosen to offer or post their complete collection. I think I understand why; I once made a free seed offering, and was inundated with "gimme" requests - most of whom had no interest in either saving or sharing what I sent them. It was a serious drain on my resources that year (in both time & postage) so I withdrew that offer the following year. Most of those on this site are serious farmers or horticulturists, and are far more likely to preserve and/or share any seed they receive - which is the reason I am opening up my collection here. (Not, I confess, without some trepidation).
