5F right now in Philadelphia! Glad the days are getting longer! Two days later, we hit 60F! What a roller coaster!

After a couple weeks of spring-like weather (highs near 80F), a storm blew in today. High winds most of the day--my 7' tall Swedish Red soup peas were not at all comfortable. At one point I watched, through the skylight in my living room, as a higher layer of clouds moved due west, and lower clouds moved due north (perpendicular tragectories). I guess this is demonstrative of how our little valley causes swirling wind patterns.
Later, I drove up to Mt. Diablo and watched as the storm-front overtook Walnut Creek. Came down in buckets for a little while.

Yeah; we got a little rain, no big deal. The winds dropped some dead poplar on a parked car; ouch!
Pleased that better rain is happening tonight.

5F right now in Philadelphia! Glad the days are getting longer! Two days later, we hit 60F! What a roller coaster! It has been strange here in Maine this winter as well. Record warm December and January, hardly any snow, but when we did get any, it soon melted. The fields are all open and muddy right now. I have to wonder how it will effect pest pressure this summer.

We had 73 F today. Flies, lady bugs, stink bugs and a few wasps clustered on the south wall of the house in the sun. I was out with my shovel getting a couple spots turned over to plant later and got bit by a mosquito, February mosquitoes, that's a first I think.

Yup, I also found a mosquito flying today in PA. Not a good sign . . .

There'd been .8" of rain on the farm; prolly came down cats and dogs, as there were still poodles; the western peaks were twice as snowy as last week.

The insects may seem like a bad sign, but for everything there is a balance. Several years ago we had a very warm winter, and lots of ticks and other nasties started out the spring at high populations...but we also had a record crop of spiders. And then more. And then more (I think they had time for an extra generation or two that season) and by October the whole world it felt like was festooned with spider webs and there were far, far fewer pesty insects the next two years following. Praise the spiders.

A couple of severe mesocyclonic storms passed through last night, the kind that don't generally come through until May-July. They brought 1.7" of rain. Today has been very gusty.

We had 1.5 inches of rain early Tuesday morning. Strong winds all day with gusts up to 50 mph. It is finally settling down somewhat. Glad to get the rain since we were getting quite dry around here.

The "experts" are talking all optimistically about the deeper Sierra snowpack compared to last year, but in Oakland we're 2" below last year-to-date (when the rain just shut off) and 4" below NTD; our Spring rains are just not happening; after days of gorgeous weather (I'd trade it for toad-choking rain in a minute!), today the air over the Bay was much too white; I'd prefer it rainy and not to see what I'm breathing.

Been warm and dry on the farm; the western peaks, which were twice as snowy, last week, as the week before, are now much less snowy than two weeks ago.
They predict rain the coming week-end; good if it happens; no guarantees. I'm banking more on mulch than prognostication.
