It's been warm here in the high 60s. Rained a little over night. Very windy enough so that the soil is drying out enough to work. Could have done so yesterday but we went for a ride instead. Stopped at the little park below the dam and took pictures. Sometimes eagles and ospreys can be seen here but I guess it was too windy and rough to fish that day. When We got home one of the bungees securing cold frame lids had come loose and the lid had blown off and bent the frame, crap. Stuff in it was fine but now I gotta scrounge something up to fix it.

I actually started digging the garden in February this year! Amazing. The ground was thawed. Of course it's supposed to freeze and snow again tomorrow but, wow, February! Inconceivable.

S'posed to come rain tonight, possibly some daily through Monday; bad news for work, short-term, as well as on the farm; long-term, much worse if we don't get it, especially the Sierra snow-pack; Oakland is now 5" < NTD, with two months left in our normal wet season.

On the farm Saturday, there were brief showers until mid-afternoon, when it started wind and rain; this morning, the gauge had 1.8"; driving home, I saw three power-poles that had snapped at the ground; shortly after, the radio said there had been trees and poles blown over at many places in the Central Valley; tonight is predicted to be the "real" wind.
I came home a bit early, as a second storm was just cranking up; these last two are coming from a southerly direction, so the Coast Range doesn't wring them dry; the creeks in my valley are all rushing café-au-lait. Bitchin!

steev Good news with the rain, not so with the wind though. Warm night with 23Cdeg the low but a cool Southerly wind change has just blown through, no rain with it, dam it.

It's been close to 80 F for a couple days and supposed to rain all day today. It hasn't frosted for couple weeks or more, I gotta start writing those things down. Daffodils and other spring things will be full bloom in a few days. Some of the earliest wild flowers that I don't even know the identity of are already done. Buds are swelling on lilacs and fruit trees, some of the grapes are waking up. Digging in the compost for seed starting dirt found sprouts on a couple discarded ears of corn. The frenzy of planting in the window between dry enough to work and too dry to sprout will be here soon.

It's been light or moderate rain parts of the past five days; we're now >last year TD and only 3" < NTD. Been sprinkly today and it just got serious; expecting some heavy periods the next 5 days.

It is still warm and sunny here; everything is flowering and leafing out. Even later leafing trees have swollen buds. Hawthorns and some shrubs are in full flower, as are the Maple trees. Willows and lilacs are green.
On Friday, they are predicting 20 degrees F and snow. Goodbye buds and leaves! At least nothing is leafed out enough to break under the snow. After the storm, it is supposed to go right back up again.

The past 8 days have seen 6.3" of rain on the farm; about 2/3 seasonal total, so far.
The spuds keep burgeoning; then comes not frost, but blasts of frigid air at night, frying the tender growth.
In the East Bay, it looks like we'll have clear weather this week, which is welcome as work is getting delayed; got a fallen tree to slice and dice off a client's sidewalk (and a parked SUV) first thing tomorrow.

According to the CCC Rain Gauge, my nearest station (Concord, CA) has recorded nearly 4" in the past week--and has surpassed its annual average (17") by 3/4". Yay!! This doesn't end the drought, of course, but it's certainly a relief after the past few years. The last time I remember rain like this was the winter of 2010/2011.
