The seed was given to me of this now little know strain of red onion, its similar to the more commonly grown type Pukehohe Long Keeper white. Because it used to be selected for its keeping ability i plan to store this crop for up to 18 months and plant out these that keep well for that period for a seed crop,i'm really pleased how well they are growing so far,i said to my wife 'its my year of the onion',every year there's always one crop that i do very well with, this year its the onion

RichardW:
Very nice on the long keeping onions. I found a bulb this week that was harvested 16 months ago. (Utah Yellow Spanish). It has stored wonderfully. Guess I aughta go plant it and let it make seeds.

what are the characteristics of the Utah Yellow Spanish? They are like the yellow onions in this photo. They are not a sweet onion: quite stout.

richardw:
Yeah, well, my corn was nearly worthless this year, too. Looking at your photos, though, I see many (self-seeded?) things that are very nice, like lettuce.

Very nice Richard. In my trials I have found that lettuce and onions do really well together.
Joseph, is the yellow UT Spanish...(great name...) CMS?

Joseph, is the yellow UT Spanish...(great name...) CMS? Utah Yellow Spanish onion has a long history as an open pollinated variety. There are Utah Yellow Spanish hybrids on the market which would be CMS. I think that my strain is not CMS. I screen routinely for CMS and chuck any cepa onion that forms a bulbil, or that has spotty pollination, or that the pollinators ignore. There is also a strain called something like Utah Yellow Spanish Sweet Onion. I don't grow those because they do not keep as well, and long-keeping is one of my selection criteria.

Thanks Holly, ive found the lettuce does well anywhere in the garden really,i will have to go around soon and poke a bamboo stake in beside each lettuce plant otherwise there flower stems will flop over what ever is growing nearby.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but would not intentionally crossing something like the Utah Yellow Spanish onion or even the Utah Yellow Spanish Sweet onion with something like the Pukekohe Long Keeper (PLK) in an effort to create a long storage intermediate-day onion or, even better, a long storage intermediate-day sweet onion, be the essence of landrace?
My understanding is that both the Utah Yellow Spanish onion (not really sure about this one being intermediate-day) and the Utah Yellow Spanish Sweet onion are both intermediate day length onions. I would think that crossing the PLK, an onion known for very good storage, with either may increase the Utah onions' storage capabilities.
