I often wonder what would happen if people sat down and said to God: "You know how you said be fruitful and multiply? Well, we have; mission accomplished. Now what?" Joesph - do you give out more than one 'gold stars' per month, i reckon ferdzy deserves one as well

I often wonder what would happen if people sat down and said to God: "You know how you said be fruitful and multiply? Well, we have; mission accomplished. Now what?" As growers we know that to be fruitful and multiply can require serious thinning/pruning/division. I never thought of this verse as a directive to overshoot the system's capacity but rather an admonishment to appropriate stewardship. Good for you, Walk. I don't think that's the usual take on it though. I wish more people saw it that way.

I must admit to being pleased when someone gets rightfully incensed by the unmitigated shitteree unleashed by the NeoCon "American Empire" sphincters, to the point of common Anglo-Saxon vulgar expression; more syllables are mostly useful for obfuscation. I think many in the USA might think me "unpatriotic" for my opposition to much of my country's foreign policy/actions, but I think I'm very patriotic in wanting the USA to not play the bully or the rapist, nor do I think the USA should try to deny that it has ever (too often) behaved in exactly those ways. I won't remark on current Presidential politics in the USA, except to note that they are embarrassing, not just politically, but intellectually, socially, and economically. I would point out that Bush's comment about people hating us for our freedom is widely misinterpreted; he wasn't talking about Americans, in general, but about the "have-more" class, of which he was a fervent representative, and for whom his policies were intended to benefit.

This TED talk seems pertinent www.ted.com/talks/hans_rosling_on_global_population_growth?language=en So neither an atomic war nor eugenics is needed, more like a fairer redistribution of wealth. Years ago a sociology prof explained that people in very difficult countries tended to have lots of kids in the feeble hope that at least one of them would a) live and b) look after them when they got old and unable to look after themselves. Both needed to happen for their own security and neither was in any way assured so having lots of kids was an early form of insurance. Of course, it also stressed already stretched resources but the drive to live and have your genetics go on into the future is very strong, and reason very very seldom wins vs emotional compulsion. Other than that, the world could support many many more people if we would only stop mucking it up and for once try working with it instead of trying to prove we're smarter, stronger etc. We've got a lot more sophisticated technologically but in wisdom we haven't really progressed beyond an ancient habit of treating the earth like a recalcitrant child and beating it with a stick to make it produce for us.

The world shouldn't have to support many, many, more people; we've got lots, already; we're crowding other species out of existence, invading their environments, contracting their diseases. We're "supposed" to be the "smart ones", capable of seeing beyond getting chow and breeding, but we don't seem to be living up to potential.
I really don't think we used to treat "the earth like a recalcitrant child"; I think we used to recognize that the Earth is our Great Mother, to be honored as the source of our being and sustenance; I think many of us lately (60 years?) have erroneously come to the "recalcitrant child" model through desire for short-term profit. I would point out that, having been a "recalcitrant child", in the eyes of some adults, I'm not so much into the "beating with a stick" thing; never got me to "get with the program" more than very short-term (as in while being watched).
I don't doubt that we can/will continue beating Earth with a stick, but I really think Our Great Mother, Earth, has a bigger stick than we do and we're pissing Her off.
