This is the first year i am using a hoop house to start my seedlings. I have grown numerous seedlings inside and haven't had much trouble until this year......
I started them outside in a hoop house 8x10 6 weeks before memorial day ( frost freeze date 5a). All of the plants (tomatoes, Kale, Peppers) very few except the brassicas grew much of a second leaf set.
They are all extremely small and the tomatoes in particular all seemed "purplish". I thought i would add a little fertilizer (dilute kelp meal ) to help them take off and then i had massive damping off.
These were all planted in black plastic cells. However I had some in peat pots double the size of the ones in plastic. I always water from the bottom. The soil seemed over wet but i would have some dry out... It was a mess.
So i am looking for input. What the heck did i do ? Was it simply over watering ? We had a cool spring and i used a space heater to keep it to 50 ish , was it too cold?
I have a greenhouse full of cool types of tomatoes, and Kales that look like they would be direct seeded in a garden bed. Many variables, however I really enjoy starting my own seedlings and feel like i am cheating otherwise. This has been a serious blow to my confidents. I went from being sick of moving seedlings in and out of my house to no seedlings at all.....
Thanks
Ken

A double skin hoop house would make a big difference in keeping temps more even, you are really wanting more like in the 20'sC or 70'sF. The double skin would help ya space heater work better.
