While I get the good intentions of those who wish me "happy birthdays" and appreciate the sentiment, I feel I need to reiterate that it's only a year further from birth and a year nearer to death. I don't recall any great furor when I was born; I doubt I'll be aware of any when I'm dead. Get right down to it, I'm not that impressed by cake; a nice tuna-fish-chopped-olive-on-toast sandwich; that's lovely. No candles, please; my lung-power diminishes.

Depends? Not likely, though it was fun in the post.
Years ago, I was asked by an elderly woman to get her down a package of such from the top shelf, which she was too short to reach; I was appalled that they weren't where she could reach them; was it not enough that she should have to check them out, but also ask a stranger to get them for her? WTF!
Looking back at this, I realized that one of the benefits of the farm is that I can pee whenever the impulse strikes (long as I don't wander too far afield). Even then, I think I have plausible cover: "I'm old; when I gotta go, I gotta go; you gotta problem with that?" It's not like I'm pissing in concrete doorways; I'm glad to be transitioning out of the urban environment.
The thing is, we are animals and must return parts of what we take from the environment to it; if we sequester it, that's a problem.

The more I think about it, the less happy I am with the whole "happy birthday" thing; while the solstices and equinoxes relating to our Great Mother are of note, I find the birth or death of any individual human utterly insignificant. How many of us died before we even had a clue about writing, let alone thereafter noting the passage of any but the most "important"? Donald Trump will be remembered; I will not; which of us will have been the better human being? I have only an opinion.

But will who or what ever even bother to read through the human history diary, it will be such heinous reading i doubt they would even reach the last pages that are currently be written.

If only because they are so repetitious and uncreative; couldn't we (claimed to be such an innovative species) have come up with something less simian than Donald Trump? Apparently not; so much for evolution, sadly.
As a zoologist, I find Bill Maher's satirical suggestion that an orang-utan is Donald Trump's father offensive; orang-utans are a rightly proud species; to link them, even humorously, to that malignant narcissist, is defamatory to noble animals, who have done nothing to deserve such derision.

No reminders: thanks, folks; really, the Winter Solstice is of far more import to me than my birthday, coming, as it does, with noticeable effect, unlike my birthday.

I return to this thread only to reiterate my distaine for concern about birthdays; once we've had one, the only important date is our death, IMHO. Granted, cake and ice-cream are nice, but really? Why do they have to be connected to one's birth? How great a blessing was our birth to the world? Just asking; personally, I think there are altogether too many people in the world, let alone how many are being born, but I'm just a zoologist, so what do I know about ecosystems and what they can support? It's all good; we'll get by on soylent green, no problem. Love your neighbor, roasted. Yes, I have a bad attitude; that doesn't bother me; I expect to die before things get really bad; good luck to the rest of you.

A braisen thought, leaving instructions for the final stew in which we find ourselves.

Seems like people have figured out that I really don't care about birthday greetings; that's progress.

Ah shoot, I completely forgot your birthday. O well maybe next year. Actually come to think of it I don't really known when it is. Sometime between 1/1 and 12/31, I suppose. Maybe I'll just randomly pick one from time to time. Any preference on frequency?
