Wildfire smoke cleared out. Rain forecast for Thursday and a low of 34 F for Friday. Gotta pick more squash.

They predicted thundershowers late, and they were right; started sparse thunder and short spats of huge drops, every now-and-then; it's not rain, but welcome to clear the air and settle the dust.

I was fortunate enough to view that lightning from the window of a plane as I landed at the San Jose airport last night. It was glorious! When I got home the ground was wet and it smelled of rain; also glorious!

Looks like today will be the last day of smoke for awhile. Rain tomorrow. Reasonable chance of frost Friday night or Saturday night.

Last 24 hours have seen one of the best rainfalls for the last three years with 50mm falling at what is the best time of year with spring growth in full swing, having just had a winter with slightly higher than normal rainfall we should see the difference in the trees which will put on a lot more growth in the coming year.

Strong wind warning from 1:00 PM until into the night for most of Kansas. 35 MPH winds minimum predicted. Not my kind of fun, but better than many places in the news.

Hot and humid has moved back into our neighborhood. Yesterday the fog didn't lift till afternoon, kinda weird. Early afternoon, before it got hot, felt very spring like except seasons here don't have much of a signature feel anymore. I guess it was reminiscent of spring years ago.

Feeling so Fall-ish: such a relief and so invigorating.
Lot of north wind; very good; I like not seeing the air I'm breathing; clear enough to see the Sierra Nevada on the far side of the Central Valley, first time in months.
Nights are clear and getting brisk; the Milky Way is its usual wonder; how can one feel bad about being so insignificant when one is part of something so miraculous?

Maine has been having a record breaking heat wave in recent days... High 80's during the Common Ground Fair is almost unheard of... There were lots of tank top wearing people this year verses last year, people wearing winter coats.
Speaking of the fair, I met JM Fortier, Eliot Colman, and his wife Barbra Damroch.
At home, where my corn crop had been, my salad greens and especially the brassicas, are growing nicely.

Yesterday's rain continued all day. Haven't checked how much yet, but it was enough to matter. Last night it was "cold". Not quite cold enough for me to get up andd turn on the heat or find an extra blanket. But I wasn't really comfortable even under my sleeping bag which I use for a bed cover year round.

We got at least 4 inches. About 10 cm. We'd had quite a dry spell and much of it soaked in. It was a nice steady rain for about 30 hours. Usually a 4 inch rain causes problems. And there was flash floods 100 miles south. But here we were lucky.

Autumn returned yesterday. I'm ready. The heat and humidity were enough. (Although I got a late flush of long beans during the hot week...very welcome!)

Last day of the first month of spring and we only had one very light frost, thanks to largely to this frost free Sep ive got the first fruit on my young white nectarine tree and a few other seedling plums fruiting for there first time. There's three other first time apple seedlings that about to open up into bloom in the next week also. Gota love climate change.
