It means I mis-typed "that".

I was getting by with my clients by renting a truck from my mechanic; $35/day, but another guy used it and had a collision, so that's out; if I went to Enterprise, they'd want $140/day, so after gas and my helper's pay, I'd be making ~$10/hour, less than I'd get at Macdonald's; my landlady thinks I should sell the farm; she's unclear on the facts: land there is not in great demand, priced ~$2000/acre, half what I paid (it's a story); there's been some acreage across the road with a for-sale sign for at least a decade; my place would only sell if I asked much less than I've put into it, and then what, continue to live in a rented 8'x10' room in my landlady's house until I croak? NFW! In any event, I've done the responsible thing, informing my clients that I can't serve them, so I'm out of business; I suppose it's better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, but that's speculation, as I've not had that, yet; hope it gets my bad eye, but what are the odds? Oh, well, I'm still waking up on the green side of the grass.

oh, ok, thanks for the clarifications there. $2000/acre is expensive for land if you can't graze it regularly or it can't be farmed much. IMO water supply is always the biggest issue out west. if you have reliable water then the land is worth plenty. without water, then things get more interesting... hope you can get back to doing what you like to do. nothing wrong with working at Walmart until something better comes along or you can find some wheels.

Well, here in Caii, crap goes for $1500/acre or more, commonly $15,000/acre; luckily, I have good water. I just don't have transport. I hate to go back to working supportived bs, after forty years of running my own business. Oh. well, I can only walk on.

First thing I'd have to do to get a job is trim my beard, which I've been comfortable not doing for years; that might seem of no importance, but I've been working toward no social restrictions for years; I hate to regress to more conformity; there are reasons why I love it on my farm: few neighbors, who are not judgmental; freedom to just go about my life, as the impulse strikes; I've worked to other's requirements enough years; I think I deserve a "second child-hood. I want to "play" for the time I have left.

glad to see that at last there are some rains that made it to Northern California. we've had way too much rains and a lot of farm fields haven't been harvested yet.

Were I to limit my diet to Norcal native plants, I'd be mostly eating acorns... Have you had the luck to see "Les Stroud's Wild Harvest"? The show is carried by public television, but the videos can be seen on youtube.... They live out your way... should give you some ideas... Unfortunately... most of those west coast munchies don't grow here... Out in California... I shouldn't think that the length of your beard would prevent your securing paying gigs, any more than my hair and beard stops me here in the bible belt. Finding gigs growing plants... and looking like you belong outdoors... seems to go hand in glove.

Not much. I haven't had a truck, so can't get to the farm and it's been drought anyway. My landlady decided that I'm a liability, so she kicked me out; I spent 3 months in Paso Robles and am recently back in the East Bay, looking for work so as to earn money to complete the house on the farm and retire.
Turns out people aren't eager to hire old folks, nor to rent to them, so it's hard to find a place and a job. I could move to Guatemala, which I love, but not work, so the income I have wouldn't get me on the farm for much longer. The landlady and my brother think I should sell the farm, but they don't know what a loss I'd have to sell it at to unload it in even a few years; I know, it's not hot property, but that's not why I bought it; it's not the middle of nowhere, but you can see that from the roof of my pumphouse; 170 degrees of open sky and during the week, the only noise at night is an occasional coyote serenade, which is lovely; having trained as a zoologist, I'm pleased that the local fauna ranges from pumas and elk down through the smaller critters, except gophers, which I believe are aliens.
Suppose I could be depressed, but I own more cleared, level, California land than anyone in my family since my 2nd-great-grandfather homesteaded in 1870; I've put it in a family trust; my heirs may not have enough sense to hang on to it, but I won't know, so I won't give a husky; I may not bring this to success, but I'll have done the right thing, IMHO.
So my mission is to keep slogging; we'll see how far I get; the neighbors have all been told that if the breeze from my place is whiffy, they should come kick some dirt over me.
Life beats the hell out of the alternative.
