In Central America, several chiles are long-lived, so I would expect pot-culture to be very practical, low temps being the concern.

A pubescens gave one of the best stories I have when my 13 year old daughter's boyfriend made the mistake of bragging "I love hot peppers" in front of about 10 people. I gave him a guatemalan yellow and said "knock yourself out". He bit a nibble off the end and said it tasted good, then took a good bite. The thing about pubescens is that it has a different form of capsaicin that does not affect taste for about 5 minutes. So when he ate that big bite, it was a few minutes before his eyes began to cross, his face turned red, and he broke out in rivers of sweat complaining loudly that it "HURT". We took pity and gave him milk, butter, and bread to help absorb the capsaicin. He never recovered from the loss of face and my daughter dumped him a week later. He was a total loser so I was very happy.

Oh dear! The ones I bought are supposed to be "medium hot", but I may be making a batch of bear spray instead of pepper jelly.

Jeez, Dar, that was cruel (though gratifying, I don't doubt).
